« on: November 23, 2010, 06:19:00 PM »
I need to get a conventional set up for bridge fishing. Don't wanna buy junk but don't need to go top shelf for I'm only gonna use this occasionally. Length action brand. Any help u can give me
Its better to sit in a boat and think about God, than to sit in a church and think about fishing.

t^   I have the Atlas 200 also,  what a great reel. If you need something a little bigger they make a Atlas 400 too...Go for it you will not be sorry.    t^
Fishing, with me, has always been an excuse to drink in the daytime.

Just a question first.  Why do you want a conventional for bridge work?  I have used spinning gear for years and have had no problem.  If you are seriously thing conventional I would go for something that you can cast from the surf as well.

Abu Garcia 4000 or 5000 series reels will work great, cast well and will allow you to crank to the height of any bridge or pier.

If you are going to pigeon hole your outfit you will be loosing out on a great fishing experience.

I was thinking conventional because I didn't think spinning gear would be strong enough for reeling against the river

It is not necessary as the new spinning reels will handle it pretty well. I use the Penn slammer reels and I can attest that they are work horses.

But if you want a good conventional try looking at either the Penn 525 Mag or the Abu Garcia 5500 series.  They both have great casting ability and their drags are one of the best out there for the price.
