Gravity bleed???
« on: December 17, 2010, 09:59:37 AM »
Can I gravity bleed my trailer brakes? Putting new calipers on and don't have any helpers around to help me bleed them. They are surge brakes. Was thinking that I can elevate the tungue and open the fill. Start at the closest caliper and go back.
Thanks.

Here is an Idea.  Buy a vacuum bleeder at either Harbor freight or an  auto parts store. They cost anywhere from $15 to $30  you attach the hose of the vacuum hand pump on the bleeder before cracking it open.  The hand pump has a gauge on it. Bring the gauge up to 15 Inches then crack open the bleeeder.  Repeat until all the air is out of the system.  Do each wheel, starting with the wheel  furthest from the actuator first.  This is a one man job.  Good Luck   t^

A Vacuum Pump should be a mandatory piece of equipment for every garage. Works like a charm.  t^  <'((((><

Fishing, with me, has always been an excuse to drink in the daytime.

Tried the gravity bleed but it was not working. Went out and got a hand pump kit. It had no real instructions. It explained what the kit did but did not say how to use it. So I did my best and ended up getting fluid to to to calipers but it was mixed with air for a long time. I did not think that there was that much air in those little lines. I did all the calipers the same way and then did a really big gravity bleed. I raised the tungue up about 6 feet. When I cracked open the bleeders I had no air for 15 minutes . That was on each one. So I think the hand pump was working but I was drawing air out through bleeder valve threads. Got it all together and ran some tests and everything looks good. Tires lock up in reverse with out the power connected.  Pulling the boat tomm. Hope all is well. It is a long drive home.

You will get air through the threads of the bleeder but, that Ok. Just do about 3 or 4 bleeds with the pump and you should have all the air out.
