1/6Road trip to NJMFC meeting(summer flounder)1/6
« on: December 30, 2010, 05:17:50 PM »
OK please correct me if I am wrong but I believe there is a New Jersey Marine Fisheries Council meeting on 1/6 at 4:00pm  @ the Galloway Township Libray which is located on Jimmy Leeds rd in Absecon. Sounds like a great idea for a road trip to  get informed and meet some  peeps for coffee.  I will be out of state all week but scheduled my flight to get back early and should be able to make it no problem. Anybody else wants to hook up in the Woodbury area shoot me a pm.  Have a great New Year

Guys,
I believe that the flounder meeting will not be until april.  They will give us all of the options for and we each will have a vote.  One Person one vote.  I also believe they are going to have the meeting in Toms River since the room is bigger.

But do not let this stop you from going to the meeting.  I will most likely be there.

It is my understanding that this meeting (1/6) will be used for public input on the recommendations that will then be sent to the scientific commettee for review that will then be used to develop options that  inturn will be voted on at Aprils meeting. Correct me if I am wrong, again as I understand it this is one of few meetings that our rec voice can be heard. I am very interested in seeing what impact on option choices could be had with some tweeking of wave 3 data and if it could even be a viable option. Hopefully  Capt Adam will post a reply of the can and cannot of this type of meeting and information that we as rec anglers may find useful prior to it.

You are 100% correct. This would be the meeting that you can ask the state to look at other option.  Capt. Adam felt that it would be best if you come with option for them to recommend to the state.  Not all options will be approved but in the april meeting we will see the ones that work.

Any news?
The diner was great and Capt Joe is a really nice guy. Great bs session after the meeting. The meeting well it was like most meetings..... read the minutes , give reports and then ask for public comment. It appears the council was not to interested in public comment concerning fluke.  They stated what is really the truth, that the technical commitee will provide the options and then anglers will have a say as to what options  they like. Capt Fran did present a list of suggestions that he gathered from the Internet and asked that  it be brought into consideration by the technical committee when making options. He also suggested that the committee request the most liberal available limits under the quota. I believe the tech committee will meet on the 16 th and provide a list of options.  There will be plenty of annoucment  prior to meeting that the voting will occur and the options should be posted all over the Internet .

They also made mention that the  angler registry passed today. It is awaiting the govs signature . Now the pressure is to get him to sign it.

Good to see you there tonight Capt Birch. Nice statement you made on trying to get info to the fishermen from the various management committees.

I will add that it was also brought up that filling out the state saltwater fishing survey will be an immense help to data gathering. Here is a link to the survey.

Thank you.

The question is, when the GOV signs it, do we have to register with the state and get another card?  Or is the NOAA Registry card good enough?

I wrote to ASMFC and gave my suggestion as to what the fluke season should be.  My vote is May 14 to September 19 six fish at 17 inches.  And let the "doormats" go.  They are breeders.  Its time we kept some male fish.  JMO!  Thanks

I think the questions maybe IF the gov signs. He needs to be hounded like an over stuffed Corizine on this one until its law.

Just one comment on a point that I see brought up all the time. I see post about giving the "breeders" or female fluke a brake. It may have been a point  when the fishery was being overfished but loses it objective in a fully rebuilt fishery. We have targeted this size fish and the population has increased to a healthy fully rebuilt fishery. NMFS claims the stock is at its target level and now under a management plan. We as fisherman have been so conditioned to think harvesting a renewable resource at a sustainable level may be a bad thing . Could the system be tweaked for even larger  sustainable harvest with the same size bio mass? I really don't know but I do know that is not even an option under the current system.

He will sign it.......  He went to that NJOA or whatever they are called picnic when he ran for office.  If we were teachers we would have a problem, but we are fishermen......  He will sign it.  I hope.    t^

He has three option once it is on his desk

1. sign it
2. veto it
3. let it sit and if it sits for 45 day it will be law.  (My day count might be off)

Is it safe to say that the bill is sitting on the Gov's desk at this time, or is there a time period between Assembly and his office and desk ???
