Unfortunately, the way the rules and regs are writen it leads to things like this. Similar to releasing a gut hooked 17 1/2" flounder that you know won't survive.

The entire system needs to be changed to avoid these type of acts which disgust us.

CaptBob has a related post with some good info that I copied from:

From Stripers Forever:
Send a letter to Louis Daniel Ph.D. the Director of Marine Fisheries in NC.  We hope that you will send the note below or something like it in your own words to Dr. Daniel and let him know that this is a barbaric and unacceptable practice.  Here is an e-mail link to his office louis.daniel@ncmail.net.

Dear Dr. Daniel – The world is now aware of the terrible misuse of the striped bass resource caused by the commercial ocean trawl fishery off the North Carolina Outer Banks.  These fish are worth considerably more per pound if allocated to the recreational fishery in North Carolina than when taken by commercial harvest.  But if the practice of commercial fishing for striped bass must continue in NC, certainly the participants should never be allowed to cull and high grade these fish.  It is already too late to save the thousands of large striped bass wasted by this fishery during the 2011 winter season, but we hope that you will use the power of your office to keep this from happening in the future.

Sincerely;
A. Fisherman

note his last name is Daniel not Daniels as was reported. The eamil addr is correct, no "s" on the end.

Well at least the story is getting some coverage on the news.  This is a link from a local news station Norfolk.

The Striped Bass needs to get game fish status along the entire east coast or this will never change.

I think it is funny how the commercial fisherman blame the state for this wanton waste.
