Gone Fishing ( The report )
« on: March 28, 2011, 01:56:55 PM »
As mentioned very early Sunday morning I had a date with the Monger for some Cod/Blackfish

Did the usual pack up and check everything twice the night before...I have to because my brain doesn't function that well in the early morning hours...I was so siked to get out that I think I only dosed off for an hour and a half of sleep...

Had a 6am departure and arrived at the dock about 5:15 to find Wayneo and mate Matt already in their preparation for the day...( Jerry is down in Del running the Bandit)

Threw the ropes at 6am sharp and made our way south east for a decent run to the first drop...got set up and had cod right away...

Seemed the fish were very picky though...you would catch 2..3 fish and the bite would die....slide back on the anchor a bit and pick at some more fish...that was the M-O all day on probably 6 or 7 wrecks.

Back to the dock @ 6 pm !  talk about a full day "the Monger Way"

The days tally...14 keeper cod up to eight pounds, 2 blackfish and 4 conger eels.  Not a bad days work at all.

Kudos to Wayneo...worked his a$$ off all day, if the fishing slowed to much for his liking he was off to the next spot without hesitation...
With diesel @ $4.19 gal he burned quiet a lot...with only 4 fares in the cockpit...

Matt the mate was awesome...Johnny on the spot all day with snags and re-rigs ( ya get spoiled on the Monger.)

Just great to get out and get the cobwebs off...
Cod for dinner tonight!!

Nice trip Kenny. That's the true Monger way. Don't wait for it to happen, make it happen.  t^

I have heard from others of the same type of bite. Catch a couple in the first ten minutes of the drop and then it would slow down considerably and you would have to move.  5hrug

Been reading the same Joe...I think the local wrecks have been fished hard all winter by the PBs and are pretty much cleaned out by now...

I read that the J2 found some herring and sand eels out on the flats away from any wrecks or structure and got in some quality 20-30 lb fish over the weekend...

All in all a great cod season for NJ waters...

Nice chrz how far did you go out.

I would say 15 to 18 miles was the farthest we were out...mostly south...and we did work some pieces closer to the beach maybe 4 to 5 miles

At one point I could see a very small but visible Barnagate light house.

nice report.... I always heard the Monger will find the fish, even if it means staying out there all day and burning a ton of fuel..
