Late 04/09/2011-Raritan Bay Striper Report
« on: April 11, 2011, 04:23:10 PM »
Fished a NS out of Leonardo. Ran to the back and start marking bait with scattered bass marking around Keansburg. Set up on the first batch of good marks but after 45 minutes and no action, we pulled anchor and headed west to the Keyport flats. After short period had the first fish of the day to the boat a 27.5" bass. I had the next hit but missed it. No more action here so we moved over to Morgan Flats but here once again there was nothing doing. Moved out to slightly deeper water (15'). We were now in the last hour of the incoming tide and the bass started to bite. Picked for a bit then had a nice 20 minute flurry. Picked again during the high slack and into the first hour of the outgoing and had another nice 20 minute flurry.

We boxed 8 keepers (28-30"), boated and released a dozen shorts and added 2 fat flounder (17.5 & 15"s) to the catch.

On the way in the gannets were working in full force..first off Spremacelli Cove and then off the AH breakwater. Was pretty cool watching 40+ birds all dive-bomb at the same time. We put out some Stretch 25 plugs but did not get a touch. The machine showed intense bait readings but no bass marks.

Fishing, with me, has always been an excuse to drink in the daytime.

NS=Non-sponosr.

I couldn't remember if this site allowed the posting of charter/party boats names if they were not a site sponsor, so I erred on the side of caution.

We were fishing the pier by the spy house today and the guys at the end caught a total of 3 keepers.

Has the Spy House pier been rebuilt? Last I heard it was heavily damaged and closed following the severe nor'easter in March 2010.

I used to fish there often not too many years ago. Great spot from stripers until about the 2nd week of May. Once the bluefish enter the bay, bunker chunking there is allot of fun. But what really has me excited is that I used to do very well with fluke there (albeit the size limit was 17"s then) most of the Month of May. In fact, I've taken fluke off that pier up to #7. And now with the early opening of fluke season... TT^ grtn clp...I just might return to fishing it.
