4-Spot Flounder?
« on: August 03, 2011, 02:21:25 PM »
What's this I'm hearing about a 4-spot flounder?  Looks like a fluke, but has 4 spots on it's back.  I hear they are unregulated and taste just like flounder.   5hrug  Anyone?

I didn't know they even existed until I read this report. Then I did some research and found that they aren't regulated, somewhat rare, live mostly offshore and have an average size of 10-12 inches long with an 18 incher considered large.

A little more info.

The tail is a little different and they have smaller scales so the feel "slimey".

Kinda of like saying a German Shepard and a collie are the same thing because the are both dogs.
One look at a four spot and you can tell its not a fluke(summer flounder)
We see a handful of them on the broken bottom  most years in 60 to 80ft

I am going to revive this old thread. Caught one of these guys today while sea bassing in 80 feet off of Barnaget. You can tell right away the difference between them and fluke. Looks like a fluke crossed with a sundial. Decided to keep it and see what my belly thinks. Really thin skin that separates from the fillet effortlessly. And the fillets are a beautiful white meat, not grayish like fluke or flounder. Having for dinner with some sea bass and ling tomorrow. Measured at just above 16" btw so it's a larger specimen.

Here is a clip art of a 4 spot flounder that shows the distinctive four spots on it's back.
