Anyone install their own trim tabs?
« on: August 07, 2007, 01:50:31 PM »
Next season (or between seasons) major project will be adding trim tabs.

I could have marina do it, but looking at 300-400 to do the instal on top of 500 for the tabs.

I will be going with lenco electrics for various reasons. The install instructions look VERY easy (especially for my very handy friend who will be helping me).

Anyone ever install their own?
Any tips or advice?

I would like to save the 300-400 if I can, especially since it seems like a 3-4 hour job and a lot of that time is pulling wire.

I already have pull string from transom to helm thru hull (and thru the PVC tube under deck).

Cake.  Used Bennetts. Installed them 3 yrs ago and no problems at all to date.  Instructions pretty foolproof as well.
Watch where you mount the control switch. I mounted mine to the right of the steering wheel. Looking back, I would mount it to the left so I can work the throttle with my right hand.
The actuators mount differently on every boat. Mine, unfortunately, are under the waterline. Nothing like drilling 2 - 1" holes in your boat. Sealed everything up with 5200 and no leaks at all.
Seal every screw in the transom with 5200. Dont be stingy with it either!!  Last thing you want is water intrusion into the transom .

Thanks Duff. Maybe I will call you in as a reinforcement when we do it since you only live a few minutes away. I will supply the booze ;)

Should be easy tho since I am going with electrics. Don't even have to worry about hydraulic fluid tanks or anything.

Have beer , will travel   ;D

Start looking for tabs after Christmas. Use whatever gift cards, cash etc ya get, along with some decent sales, post holiday, and you'll get a decent deal on the tabs.

Install first few weeks in March and your ready for the season.
