Newark Bay 9-28-11

Got out for about an hour tonight trying the catch my first fall striper, actually I would've been happy with pretty much anything. (I'm usually not too picky with what I catch) It's pretty hard to catch any fish if the crabs are all over your bait within a minute or two of it being in the water. So you probably know where the rest of this report is going. Skunk.

I thought they stay in the bay just bury themselves in the mud when it gets colder. That's not until sometime in November though cause I still get those annoying guys messing with my bait in November.

There is actually a ban on crabs and shellfish in the bay. I think fish are good to eat from there though.

second thought...nah woodnt eat eat either.......

 I understand the difference of fish and shellfish and all that ....what i dont get is......theres a ban on shellfish but you can eat the fish but they swim and eat from the same place

The way I see it it kinda makes sense. Clams, mussels and crabs spend 99% of their life in the bay and also live on the bottom. The mud holds all the harmful sediments and heavy metals, they either filter feed or eat off the bottom, therfore they get it into their system easily. The fish don't spend nearly as much time in the bay. They move around a lot. The fish you catch in the bay could be by sandy hook in a few hours, unlike the crabs which will almost always stay in the bay. So the fish aren't exposed nearly as much as the crabs are.

I understand what your sayin,i really do..   i think its funny thats all......i dont really eat alot of fish but my family and friends do. I like crabs........

Yep. But then again, those fish then swim elsewhere, where they end up in being caught and consumed anyway.   The main health hazard is from heavy metals, which they say causes neurological damage. I've been eating the stuff all of my life, which just might explain a few things.    <'((((><

Leaving Seawaren Creek towards Raritan Bay, crabbing on the NJ side is prohibited.......on the SI side there are commercial crabbers taking  whatever crabs the river gives up....someone said they send them down to Maryland where they establish residency, send them back and resell them in NJ as "Maryland" crabs!

We had a house in oceanview delaware 10 min. car ride to oceancity md. until we sold it last year.. We ate many crabs and they just like nj taste like crab......But i do have to say wayyyyy bigger ones more often.....
