Striper fishing amatuer needs help
« on: October 07, 2011, 05:54:29 AM »
So I finaly got my fishing boat.  I know its late in the season but was waiting for the right deal.   Now to the important part, STRIPERS.  I have had a dark cloud over my head when it comes to these fish.  Went out last weekend by sandy hook and tried the bunker thing, sand eels, and clams. Tried anchoring then drifting. all I caught was the largest sea robins i had ever seen and a bunch of large blue fish at the end of the day.

Can anyone give some advice?  I am going out this weekend and taking my fiance.  I would love for her to hook into a striper so she will enjoy the boat.

Thanks for the help

If you explor this forum you will find a bunch of threads on this....

But if you go to where the draggers are dragging(you have to look for them) drift some clam behind them... You could also try the rip....Right now from what im hearing...early morning/early evening is better

Just keep at it and try to learn each time you go out.

Definitly read the wealth of knowledge here and maybe pick up a copy of one of the local fishing magazines or a book.

Knowing where the "Fleet" Is and keeping an eye on how they are doing. is a good start..  I think this time of year they are doing better with clams.. and chumming..

Thanks for all the advice, as for the one holding the bigger fish in the picture, she picked up the biggest blue fish yesterday.  No stripers in the boat, but a bunch of blue fish.  Strange picking up these large Blue fish from the bottom, but at least the rods got bent.  Going out again tomorrow morning with some friends.   Lets see how this goes.   So far the striper fishing count is Stripers=0, Diesel fuel = 800, bait = 250, beer and food 200, good times = Priceless.

I will add a picture when she wakes up and gets it off the camera.

The Stripers are just starting to come back, The water still needs to cool down a bit. If you are clamming you need to buy a full bushel and wack most of them with a bat overboard for chum while anchored. Live eels will produce well in a week or two, My log books have Stripers on eels from Late October to mid November. Good luck,
