New reel design. Your thoughts?

Check out this reel.  Just curious to get everyone's feedback.

At first glance it appears to be a gimmick. However, Doug Hannon seems like (from the few times I've spoken to him) a straight shooter. In fact, once when he was on an ESPN show that was sponsored by Abu Garcia, someone asked him what company made the best reels, he said, "Shimano."  He is also well respected in the fishing industry, and  holds several patents, including the weedless trolling motor prop. 

He is an "out of the box" kind of person, and whatever you think of the reel, you must admit, it is certainly a radical idea!

How the hell do you birdsnest a spinning real

When you cast out and then turn the bale, if the line is loose it can gather above the spool instead of on it.  After you retrieve the line this line will still be above the spool.  When you make the next cast the line coming off of the spool grabs this section of line and pulls it, along with the turns on the spool that are over it, off of the spool.  That caused a nasty bird's nest.

I hope I explained this so it can be understood.

I never use the handle to flip the bail over. Always flip it with my hand. Don't know if that's good or not but I don't have too many problems.

AS=s for the spool design, I guess time will tell. Doug Hannon does seem to be a smart guy and a class act.

The longer cast portion is good also. Less spool friction = further distance.  I wonder if I did this to a spare spool if it would work the same.  Maybe I will try it and see.

Thanks for the vid. I'd agree with you, Doug Hannon is definitely out of the box, and a straight shooter from what I've seen over the years.

The concept is absolutely solid in my opinion, I don't see it as any kind of gimmick. While I have used spinning reels since I was a kid(cut my teeth on Mitchells in the 60's), it is a problem that occurs for me occasionally. There is no way I'd pull a foot of line off the spool with the drag after each cast, that would simply make a spinning reel far to inefficient. I find this loop generally occurs when you're blitzed by fish and in a hurry casting, I tend to forget to make sure I have a tight line before I start to reel, and of course, I wind up with this problem when I need the reel to work the most. I can understand how the concept of this spool would eliminate that problem, and I am going to be looking for one of these to try out.
