Outboard Tilt Problem

I have had a problem creep up with my outdrive tilt on a 1990 23' WA Trophy. It seems over the last few times it was hard to get the outdrive to go up or down. Now here's where I am at with it.

- The trim switch on the throttle does not raise or lower the drive. I have confirmed there is power to the switch and the switch is not defective. There is no sound from the hydrauluc pump when this either up or down is selected.

- When using the button to put the drive in trailer position there is a sound from the pumpt which sounds like a relay clicking but, no operation of the drive up.

- I have have applied power to both the up and down hot terminals and the hydraulic pumps works correctly when jumped.

I am not an electrical wizard but, I would think all possibilities point to a relay or solenoid problem?

Anyone have any ideas for me?

Thanks. That is what I am thinking since it is intermittent and that I have power to the switches and everything works fine when jumped.

Just one more thing to add to the winter/early spring list.

there are 2 for each engine. 1 is for the up, the other is for the down.  sometimes if you tap them, they may work.  Capt. Matt from Task Marine took care of my problem mid season and showed me what it was.  Also, make sure your hydrolic fluid is full.

If they are working when jumped--check the Batt. voltage first. And connections for corrosion

Thanks guys. Also, I meant outdrive (IO) no outboard as I posted. It looks like one relay was already replaced before as one is white and the other is black. The pump and resevoir look newer as they are pretty clean for an old boat.

I have two - do you think I should just replace both at the same time? I think I found them for about $15 each.

If it was my boat i sure would.When in pairs change them both. If one is/went bad the other is sure to follow.

I just read on another forum that these solenoids can be replaced at a local auto parts store because they are "universal". Any truth to this? If I pulled them is there information on them to where I similar replacement can be found? I am sure that's a dumb question, but don't want to replace them with something that isn't going to work or cause more damage.

Fred are they the CAN type  or the square type relay--if square I'd be happy to send you a few--30/40amp

If by "can" you mean they look like rounded and sit upright that is what I have.

OK those i can't help you with--Pull one and take it with you-whoever you get them from should be able to match the correct amps and voltage.

If it was my boat i WOuldnt buy anything at a "car" store.

 Id also take one of the old ones with me to whatever marine store i go to.
