very well possible, but i would think the average joe's surf gear wouldn't hold up and take a crap 10 seconds into the fight, or as soon as the fish realized it was hooked

chatter last week was bluefin 5 miles out
All your tuna's are belong to me

That looks to be Bayhead. They had tuna busting right in the reef. Ive seen them as close as 2 to 3 hundred feet off the beach. Coulnt get them to touch nothing. Its happenned before. I believe it, would sure like to have seen it play out though, had to be a hoot.  Capt Mike

Yeah, that is Bay Head.  I have seen tuna beach themselves before in the surf.  Sure that was a fight on surf gear.  Question is, does the average surf fisherman have the proper permits?

i don't think the average surf fisherman has the gear to land that fish from the surf.  A fighting fish like a tuna, plus the current of the surf... easy cut off.
Fish out of Toms River NJ.
Call Nick for open boat, 973-417-5756, or on Channel 68.

I believe it with all the sand eels along the beach it was only time the tuna came in that close, year after year we see more tuna inshore within a few miles of the beach.I think he did land the fish, with all the high end reels and braid.had to be a great fight and I would have loved to been there to see that.

whs I agree! have heard many stories over the years of BFT landed at the beach...years ago there was a write up in the Fisherman Mag and was documented from a head boat with pictures as the guy tail roped it and drug it up the beach, Fish went over 100 lbs as I remember.
