Info needed on FL fishing

Looking to head to the Keys this spring for some offshore fishing (tuna?). Any recommendations on which island, when and a guide/charter?

I like Key Marathon.  There is no need to go deep.  Most of the great fishing is local, including tarpon under the bridges.

I've been to the Keys a few times but never offshore. I booked my charters through either Bud and Mary's or Papa Joe's marinas. Both are in Islamorada. Call them and they'll set you up with one of the many Captains that they work with. Good luck.

Marathon is nice with charters and if you are looking to do your own thing, Captain Pips has the best boat rental. Like Nick said the bridges early am and late in the day for Tarpon. Deep water with plenty of life just 5 miles off.

One year I rented a boat around Marathon and did my own thing with a friend. We hooked and lost a couple of tarpon and sharks. Had lots of fun catching snapper. They are great on the grill and put up a great fight.

We anchored near the Bahia Honda bridge and used live pinfish on a slip sinker rig,


There's lots of shoals and shallow water so you must be very careful. You can be in inches of water real fast and except for around the bridges, there aren't a lot of channel markers.

The Bahia Honda bridge is a great spot. Just make sure you don't go under the old bridge, go thu the cut out.

I used to go to Key Marathon with my brother, father and grandfather.  My uncle owns Marathon Liquors down there and we stayed in his Condo "Sea Watch" and had a personal Captain all week.  Everyday we took a short ride to a local wreck by the 7 mile bridge.  We netted our own bait and caught everything from Snapper, Grouper, Baracuda, and sharks.  EVERYTHING.. We were in  maybe 10' of water and close to home. 

The best part about fishing down there is that you never know what is on the other end of your rod.  Every hook up is a surprise.

I just got back from key west this week,  the weather was unreal, 80 everyday.....i was down at the right time as warmfront was present, water temps were up and the BLUEWATER bite was ON,  had a great day as we trolled some monster Wahoo and Dolphin chasin our teasers and Ballyhoo all day.

theres snow on the way    lets make sure the Yammie is in top shape, thats priority.  then some paint, a good cleaning and then we are good to go.
