Line Counting Trolling Reels
« on: January 13, 2012, 07:32:32 AM »
Whats the thought of the importance or need of line counting capability on a trolling reel? Okuma seems to have a fairly inexpensive line of reels and/or combos.

I have the Daiwa Accudepth 47lc reels for 5 years now with no problems. I use them in fresh and salt and hold up well. When I buy a new reel and you can get it with a line counter I get it that way. It's great when you are running the boat and have someone put the lines out, you tell them the number you want to run at.

When I am black fishing, the guys are allway asking me what the number is to the bottom, so they don't past it.  rofla

Linecounter is nice but you really do get a feel for how much line your letting out and you can always mark your line with a magic marker

Rather than spending the money on the reels (although the 4 reels for $50 is a steal, if you pass that up then I'm on it like a fly on poop), you can also go the route of buying the braided line that is color marked so you can tell how much line is let out.  Linecounters filled with Braid as opposed to Mono tend to be a little inaccurate.

NJGuy, if Fellinger doesn't want those reels hit me up.

Also....Berkeley makes a line counter that works fairly well on mono and braid....havent tried it on wire....clip it to your rod and run the line through and lock it up.....has tension settings like outrigger clips do. Works ok if you dont want to dump a ton into new reels.

...but that deal is a steal on the reels!
