 Is there a difference between marine silicone and the type you use around the house? Thanks!

yup. what are you using it for, use 3m 5200 for permanent and I mean permanent applications. and use 4200 for semi permanent applications depending on what your using it for you may be able to use household if your gluing on weather stripping but for anything that has to hold up use the marine stuff. Also try to have all your items to be sealed ready at one shot because it is hard to keep an open tube good and at 19 - 20 a tube you dont wanna be throwing away money

Like BigAl said...yes there is a difference.

What are you using it for?   The home version of silicone from the box stores wont hold up at all to salt and UV.  If you plan on using under the water line, they are even a bigger no-no on a boat.

3M 5200 is the way to go.  Grab the tubes from HD or Lowes in the caulk gun size, alot cheaper than at the marinas. The top can be sealed with masking tape and I've had tubes last almost 2 years before drying up if you seal it up right.

Thanks for the replies! Will be used above the water line. Just using it around the Center Consul where it meets the deck. More cosmetic than anything. But will stick with the 3m product.

Use 4200.  5200 is permanent, and I mean permanent.  I have seen a 200HP outboard hanging off a transom without the bolts in from 5200.  It took alot of prying and encouragement to get it off.

But they can't make tires last for more than 60,000 miles??? Seems crazy to me.

Hmmmm, tires made of 5200...might be onto something there.  Although I wonder how they'd pry it off the molds

I thought silicon was silicon and 5200 was polyurethane.

I've used good outdoor silicon on my boat without any problems with it breaking down, but i agree with everyone about the 5200.

For general sealing even 3m 4200 is overkill. Besides 3m, I use BoatLife LifeSeal. Tougher than silicone but much easier to remove than 4200 and it does not dry up in the tube opening. Good for above or below the waterline, however when I do thru-hulls below the water line, its nothing less than 4200. If I'm using silicon, its 3m or BoatLife.
