Opening Day of Fluke Season
« on: May 06, 2012, 08:12:37 AM »
Fellow Anglers,

Fished opening day of Fluke season this morning with Tom Tanacredi and John Lucciola which is becoming a ritual with these two avid fisherman and Reel Fun Sportfishing. I too must admit that opening day of Fluke season is very special to me also, much more so than Trout season as I'm an avid saltwater fisherman as you can tell.

The day started off somewhat ominously as I elected to stay in port for a while longer than our 7 am departure time due to a pea soup fog that surrounded Twin Lights Marina. Even though I have radar on my boat, most recreational boaters do not and the last thing I need in this early season is to get rammed and lose the boat for the season. So around 8:15 we departed the slip and we were on our way.Regretfully, the cold damp, foggy and drizzly weather stayed with us for the entire day making for a less than enjoyable fishing trip, but the fish DID cooperate nonetheless.

For the second year in a row, we were forced to fish on the lee of the land of Sandy Hook due to a constant east/northeast wind that was producing all the crummy weather. Employing both bucktailing Spro jigs as well as drifting squid/Peruvian smelt combo's, we had a active day landing 19 Fluke and boxing 6 keepers with one fish hitting the scales at 4.5 lbs. I also may add that we were constantly harassed by Bluefish throughout the day, some of which made out bait table and were used as strip baits that produced the 4.5.lb'er.

The Bluefish, I may add, have become a real problem throughout Raritan and Sandy Hook bays as reports I am getting from my sources tell me that getting to the Striped Bass is being met with limited success. It could be the full moon we're in right now, the Bluefish, or both but the Stripers have not been cooperating for the past 4-5 days in many areas. Although I'm getting some sporadic good reports, it's not been the same fishing I had 2 weeks ago were I had almost daily limit catches. We have to watch this very closely. Finally, I may add that our fillets produced 16 lb's of meat....not bad.

Tight Lines,
Capt. John

Its better to sit in a boat and think about God, than to sit in a church and think about fishing.

Rod,

None....all the keepers were all over 18" mark and most of the throwbacks were around 16-16.5" mark, and I think 2 were 17".
