Night fishing?
« on: May 14, 2012, 06:19:23 PM »
Anyone go out at night for stripers this time of year?

I know in the fall, fishing with eels at night is a good method, I just don't know if it is this time of year too?

This time of year, I've done better in the early morning, before and around sunup, than during the pitch black.  If you're really keen on trying it at night, I'd either try some artificials in the back or just hit the surf 5hrug

We fished this past weekend into the evening (darkness) and did pretty good, Ross. It's doubtfull that I can make it out this week because of my trip to FL but, I am planning on a 3-4pm departure next Thursday.

Thanks B - good luck, safe trip!

Hey Boss, not a whole ton to report today.  We turned north and had all the bunker you could want off Sea Girt and Spring Lake, although it was tough to get on them at first because it was pretty sporty early on.  The fish were definitely there, but they weren't biting like crazy, and they really shut off once the sun got high and the boats came out. We had 4-5 solid runoffs and put 2 in the boat, the bigger of the two going 39" 22lbs.  Fishing's probably only getting better, good luck tomorrow if you get out!

My best tactic for bass at night is to find a shoal with a good running tide and anchor up. Crack clams heavy and HOLD ON. Plan for at least 1/2 bushel on a short trip if not more. Some like to add some superjuice (spray or dip) attractant to the special clamchunks you save for the 8/0 or bigger circle hooks.

I have had luck jigging around bridge pilings where the bridge lights attract baitfish but this can make for tedious boat handling and never (for me at least) as much fun or productive as clammin'.

Also make sure you are familiar with the area you will be fishing, and stay alert. Nighttime is a whole different ballgame out on the water compared to daylight.
