Anchor worm in snappers?
« on: July 29, 2012, 10:51:24 PM »
Hello all,
I went fishing today at Sandy Hook for baby blues. Caught quite few and had lots of fun. I took some of the bigger one home  as I heard they are very delicious. While preparing the fish, I noticed that there was this long stringy/stretchy threadlike 'thing' hanging out the side of the fish. There were quite a few,had a green part to it and up to 2 inches long. It was buried deep under the fish's skin or even appear to be in the tissue itself. I researched my findings and found that the description matched that of 'anchor worm'. It seems as these are found only in fresh water fishes and would make sense as I was fishing near a lagoon sort of enviroment. Sadly, I had to discard the fishes as I didn't know what it was at the time and if it was dangerous to humans in anyway.Has anyone seen anything like this before and is it possible for snappers to get this?  ???

There are literally thousands of different parasites that fish can pick up. Thoroughly cooking kills just about all of them. Still wouldn't want to eat a cooked parasitic worm though

Alot of cod have worms. Never heard of snappers getting them
Its better to sit in a boat and think about God, than to sit in a church and think about fishing.

Well its not really a worm but rather a crustacean. Guess this is one more parasite to add to the list for the snappers. Very strange since salt water is supposedly recommended to kill 'anchor worm'. Ill see if I can get a picture up here...maybe it looks like it but instead a different parasite altogether.

I used to bring the guts from different catches into a professor of mine while in college. This class was an ecology class (1 and 2) but the professor did lots of research on parasitic worms. I think we found a nematode or Trematoda or some kind of worm in just about every type of fish I brought in to him. Killies were always the worst followed by striped bass as far as diversity and actual numbers of worms. Grossed me out a bit at first but came to finally realize that most fish carry some sort of parasite, always have always will.  Kind of like ticks on a deer.  Next time you catch a snapper, look for the giant isopods sucking the blood out of there gills.  Very common with bluefish for some reason.

The thing that now scares me about fish isn't the worms but the different bacterial infections one could pick up from a cut by a fish, like the mycobacterium that cause the ugly red sores on stripers.

Snagged a bunch of bunker while sharking yesterday that had a " thread like worm " in the scales. Pretty Nasty. I put those bunks into the grinder and back over board.
