Which Penn Senator?
« on: July 31, 2012, 03:40:14 PM »
I'm in the need of picking up 4 reels to troll BFT with next year, and I'm considering on loading up with old school Penn Senators, yes the old ones, not the new made in china ones.

Problem is I don't know which model to try and shoot for, or the specs to them.

Oh, I'd be shooting for 50lb mono,,, maybe 80

What do you expect to catch going after Blue Fins. Senators are not the way to go. And you are talking 50-80 lb test ( Mono  :headscra: ) What about larger the 200lb fish and another bite. Be prepared Internationals are the way to go. and do a search on buycheaper.com ( tuna reels ) or Ebay Plus many charter boats are going belly up do a search for them. Even for big game Charter boats that change out every year with new gear. that way you may find matched custom rods And reels,.
Do not rule out Shamano ,

love the int reels and like shimano's,, just that the budget says old penn senators.

the old school ones where built like a tank to last. nothing wrong with them, and will surely handle anything out there, within reason of course.

Ebay if you have the time and patience.  Have found older 6/0's in great condition as low as 40 bux.  Heavy reels but cant kill em.  Spend a little on a t-bar handle upgrade and your golden.

I under stand a budget. But the one thing not to cheat on is Tackle  slt . With the investment of what a offshore trip COST TODAY  fcp it would be fool hardy to buy excuse the term JUNK when you buy a big game reel used it could cost you more to rebuild it, not to say there are good buys out there. Keep a weather Eye to buycheaper.com and Amazon along with Ebay both Ebay and amazon have private sellers plus Amazon has a return policy for the private sellers
I have Penn 4/0 both reg.Black sided  and high speed red sided old school reels. Landed fish on up to 50 + And have landed Blue Fins of 400 up to 600+ some years ago. and been aboard when a 1200 was landed. Not One less then International reels. some with Mono and some with braid, Braid is some what difficult to handle if tangles happen and Pricey. when line is lost, The leader is most important as the knots remember a leader Gamagotsu spelling may be wrong what a mistake no knot was safe with it. And Tuna no matter which one Can be very leader shy big time.
If I can help doing a search for you let me know your price range and plus do you have the rods to go with what you want. The boat was the original Gypsy Shark. Other boats Bounty Hunter ( Paul JR )Top gun ( John ) plus a few more out of Clark's and HoffMans, from 1980 - 98. So think well and be wise on what you buy it is a investment also to make the trip and have tackle failing on you,  smk

The senators should work. You might want to add longer cranks and bigger handles as the picture above shows. The older senators from the 70's still work fine but have smaller handles and cranks. t^

The ones you posted have a little to much corrosion for me overbite,, if they cant be washed properly how else where they abused.

I will check on new handles.

Trolling is pretty much over for the season now, so I'll more than likely take them to scotts b&t and have them serviced over the winter, to include new drag plates just to be safe.

Reeltime That is the advantage  of Amazon sponsored sellers the return policy that these 2 reels had, its Guaranteed. I had a few issues with a seller went to the link to contact them it said do you want to get the call back now or latter I clicked Now  the phone rang that moment and everything was settled even with a prepaid post sent to me By E-Mail for the return. Now you say its for next year.  :headscra: By no means is the bite over its just starting  5hrug The ledges are yet to come. Good luck Over and Out.  slt
