Reel McCoy Ambrose fluking and near miss 08/05
« on: August 05, 2012, 04:47:20 PM »
Left Bahr's Landing at 7am with Kevin from work.  First drift across the channel yielded a couple of shorts.  Drift was a bit fast so I put out the drift sock on the next pass.  Kevin lands a nice 5 lb Fluke and I put a just keeper in the box. Back again and this time I put a 5.25 lb in the box.  We go back to do it again and I start the drift on the flats on the green side of Ambrose.  There was a tanker coming inbound so I start the engines, swithch to VHF 13 and continue fishing as I was just on the edge of the green side. He was passing another inbound vessel and was now coming very close to my possition,  I put the boat in gear and started to slowly move back to the flats.  Had the drift sock out, now normally this is not a problem but today I decided to add a few more feet of line  rgmn.  The sock wraps the prop, I am dead in the water drifting right in the path of the freighter.  Gave him a few blasts of the horn and I saw him start to turn. Rode his bow wave down the side of this monster and cleared the stern.  Still drifting now I have to worry about the vessel he was passing, got him on the radio and he was able to avoid me.   Now on the flats on the Red side I go sit on the swim platform and start hacking away at my drift sock.  Just then the Coast Guard shows up, I get back in the boat, call TowBoatsUS, drop the anchor, and start pulling the sock from the other side with the gaff.  Made some progress and tried putting the engine in reverse which spun the sock free.  Tested it out, looked good, call off TowBoats and had the mandatory CG inspection (I passed).
Now back to fishing,  added one more 18" keeper to box.  Winds were picking up and we had enough excitement for the day so we called it a day.
Had about a dozen shorts, 4 keeper and only about 6 birds.
I am sure my exploits today will be available for all to see on youtube as there was a guy a boat filming the whole thing.

Its better to sit in a boat and think about God, than to sit in a church and think about fishing.

Glad it worked out for you.

As for the a-hole with the camera...what a douche. Sitting there filming what he apparently thought may turn into a disaster instead of having a set of testicles and helping out in the situation.  nosmly I wish nothing but bad karma to come his way.

Glad you are ok!

I have tried on several occasions to contact commercial fishing vessels to confirm their course or to see if they are towing gear so I could alter my course. I always have tried them on 16 and I have NEVER gotten a response. I see you used 13 with a response. Aren't they supposed to monitor 16??

slt Glad every thing worked out this time. And you had VHF to hail the ship. Glad that worked too slt
I am surprised that the Coast guard did not point out the need for Distress Signals day and Night. Required. Maybe you had them 5hrug But a distress Flare would have Helped. This is not Hind site or Criticism t^  just a suggestion. Bil
