Had Paul Lukas, Joe O, Mike Accordino, and Steve aboard today for yet another fluke marathon trip.
Ran south again, had a sloppy sea of 3-5' with some 6's thrown in for good measure this AM, but we had it quartering off the port stern so it wasn't that bad. Winds were out of the NE at a solid 10-15 kts this morning, making the drift ~2 knots even with the drift sock in the water!!
First set up on the pipe, only had some shorts, birds, and a couple of small greyhounds, so we shot back out to some snags 2-4 miles off and got a pick going. We'd do a drift, catch a bunch, then go back and repeat the drift and not even get a sniff. These fish are moving!
Got a call from my pal Joe who was a few miles north, so we joined up with him and a small fleet and picked away for a few more, but then after that dried up we went back offshore. Again, we had 2 real good drifts where we had a drop and reel flurry, then it'd end as quickly as it started.
By noon time, the winds calmed and the seas started to flatten, and the drift got much more manageable. We went from 10-12 oz. to 4 in a matter of 15 minutes.
Finished the day off on a lump off Bay head, and put a few more keepers in the box.
Wound up with a dozen fish in the box, biggest was 3.5# taken by Mike. NO SEABASS... Tough day, worked hard, fished hard, just couldn't get a solid sustained bite going anywhere. BTW, these guys were yet antoher great crew!! What a way to end the summer!
