Question on old Ocean City Brigantine Reel
« on: September 09, 2012, 07:42:57 PM »
Hello,

Hope someone can help. I have an old Ocean City Brigantine conventional (boat) reel that is spinning in both directions. I can't figure out how to stop it from turning backwards. What am I missing. I played with all the knobs and nuts. Is it broke? If so, can it be fixed. The reel is in great shape, so I am hoping I am just ignorant.

Thanks for any help,
Rich

I'm not familiar with that reel.  Have you ever used it before?  If not, it's quite possible the reel was made without an anti-reverse.  Some older reels were like that.

Do you have a pic of it?

This...?

From here.. http://www.oldreels.com/ocean_city.htm

Ocean City Free Spool Surf Reel. This was the first reel manufactured by Ocean City, probably coming out in 1922-23. It is a handsome reel of German silver and Bakelite. It is about 200-250 yard size.

Just going by the picture, and the absence of a star for the drag, I would say this reel never had an anti-reverse.

I never used it before. Just found it.

I found this ad on EBAY -

It talks about "Automatic Free Spool Lever" and "Gears always in mesh, but absolutely free in free spool".

"Gears always in mesh" = knucklebuster. ;D  In retrieve mode does the handle turn forwards and backwards with the spool?  That's what that means.

Free spool Not Anti Drag

What's an "Anti Drag"?  Do you mean "anti-reverse"?
