Weakfish for Dad
« on: September 05, 2007, 07:48:21 PM »
Dad turned 79 on 8/24, almost lost him this past spring. He went in for a double knee replacement had numerous complications( heart problems and a bad bladder infection, doctors had to put a direct I.V. line into his jugular vein to pump in meds). Promissed him as soon as he was up to it I would take him out fishing. He missed the spring striper run, he feels good now and wants to catch some weakfish. He loves to grill them. I need some help so I know when to book us a trip. If the weakfishing starts to take off, please post your reports so that I can fulfill my promiss to my father and the rest of the members can get in on some great fishing.

Thanks so much guys

They "say" they are catching them near Meyer's Hole, Barnegat Bay.  Just west of the Light House.  Grass shrimp'en.  Early mornings I'm told.

Well I booked a trip with the Capt. Ray of the Mad Gaffer for Tues. Sept 25. I don't know who is more excited about this trip me or my father. Tied up 6 weakfish rigs last night, I followed the tips that I got from this site. I will post my report as soon as we get back. I also can't wait until I can get back to the hook to do some surf fishing. I would love to land a keeper bass or one of those big 12-15lbs blues that are ripping up the surf.

Going to use cell phone camera. It took a good picture of my bass caught on the Madd Gaffer in early June. So why not use it again going to have the phone with me anyway.

No weakfish for Dad, But a great day on the water
« Reply #15 on: September 27, 2007, 07:48:40 PM »
Well Dad and I had our weakfish trip on Tuesday on the Madd Gaffer. No weakfish, Capt. Ray found birds working but a fleet around them. Party boats, private charters, private boats. By the time we got into position the fish were gone. Tried to clam, only caught some seabass. Moved to do some bottom fishing caught some seabass and some big porgies. Only four of use on the boat. Capt. Ray and Paul the mate work real hard to try and put a catch together. Weather was great, got sun burn on the back of my neck. The important thing is that Dad had a great time and can not wait until the bass start to run. As were we getting ready to leave the dock a small private charter was also leaving, two guys with fly outfits. When we got back to the dock they had already returned and the capt. was cleaning their catch, some nice blues, 10lb class and a false albie. I bet that was one hell of a fight on fly tackle. Well going to go put the surf bag back together, hoping to get to the hook Sunday morning.

I would be thrilled catching some big porgies and a few seabass. I would be eatin' sushi for an entire week.

Not bad at all.

those weakfish are pissing me off this season... I hate to spend $45 for a flat of worms, just to throw them away when the Weakies aren't biting.
