What did you learn and what are you going to do different?
« on: November 03, 2012, 01:21:45 PM »
The next time they are calling for a big storm what will you do different then what you did for this storm ?

Next time I will make sure the boat is full of gas or I have extra. This time I had 25 gallons in cans and I have 10 left. The boat has about 30 in it, so I should be good but could have had another 10 gallons.

Also I will make sure the inlaws have a generator. I have been seeing too much of them.  rofla

You can never have enough gas.  There's always something you're gonna overlook.  Just concentration on flooding and power outages, I overlooked heating.  So the outcome for me is.........a larger generator or an additional one and an efficient fuel supply. Hopefully, with all the downed power lines and exploded transformers, my power won't go out every time the wind blows

Here's my list:

- canned food
- flashlights
- batteries
- small UPS for electronics
- space blankets
- generator
- gas cans
- car cigarette lighter USB adaptor.
- matches
- sterno
- hatchet
- small chain saw
- last but not least a 9mm with ammo in case things get serious.

This hurricane I learned you can not siphon gas out of modern cars  rgmn. I thought I had a 20gal can on wheels  nosmly
Gonna purchase 2 more 5gal cans when they hit shelves again.
I'll also make sure to keep up my firewood supply.  I hadnt stocked up for this season and ran out after 3 days of continuous burning.  Got enough today for another 2 days.

I need an alternate means of heat.  Need to look into a safe, reliable, doesn't need electricity way of heating the house!  Or, a vacation home on a tropical island with my own private jet ;D.

If your handy Chris....you take the fuel line off the fuel rail on the engine, attach a longer hose somehow,  then hot wire the fuel pump relay, that's the hard part, every car is different.  And just pump the gas out...

Can usually loosen the filter under the car and siphon that way.  I did when I had my truck.

I am purchasing a gas generator and hook it up directly to my house..

With the boat, its difficult.  You would think that taking it out is the better choice, but this time, keeping it in the water in a back lagoon was better.

Keep the gas tank on the boat full in case you need to syphon it out and use it for your car.  With 210 gallons, I should be OK.. lol

 1. I'm going with a large generator along with a quick disconnect outside the house tied to my panel.

2. Larger diameter hose on my siphon to move more fuel faster. 10 minutes(2 beers) to fill a 5 gallon can was too long for me. Got to cut it down to 1.  chrz

Not quite sure what Id do different, but i can tell you what ive learned

The one thing ive learned thru this whole mess, and the one thing i will take away from this, is that fishermen are a breed apart, I see on here people with damages to their homes, property, boats, livelyhoods, reaching out to help others on the forum in the same or worse predicaments, without a thought to their own problems........It taught me that wearing the title Angler or Fisherman is a heck of an honor. And that NJSWF shirt i own means a hell of alot more to me now than it did prior to October 29th.

I learned that I will never ever complain about having no power after a storm like this again.  Not after today.

At my marina, only one boat did not pull, and it is the only boat without a scratch.

That no matter what happens that there are wonderful people ( like those here) that are willing to help others, and no matter how bad things get we'll bounce back. If there is ever a next time I hope that there is a NJSWF still here to help, Thanks Rod!!!

The wife and I both have direct deposit on our checks. when the power went off all the banks and ATM's were down. There were some buisnesses that were open but could not do a transaction on a credit/debit card, but would do a cash sale. Also need to add a couple more Gas cans to the supply list.

We prepared, we went through an ice storm in Sussex county 20 years ago. Lost power for days, I swear I would never allow that to happen again. I installed a generator switch over panel before the storm. It ran both of my furnaces, well pump, freezer/refrig, office and spare bedroom lights and TV.
5500 watt generator and the only problem was finding gas, which I found in PA. I was only out power for 7 days, but we made it.
I feel terrible for those that had major losses, including Al.
I hope you are all well and safe.

Yea but you had light and didn't have to throw out food. How much would you have spent on the food replacement?

Well worth it in my book.

Its better to sit in a boat and think about God, than to sit in a church and think about fishing.
