Phyllis Ann Post Sandy Stripers 11/11/12
« on: November 11, 2012, 07:35:58 PM »
Although Sandy tore a devastating path of destruction across much of our beloved shoreline,  the Phyllis Ann was luckily spared from her wrath.  So, after a long lay off, and with the stripers calling it felt terrific to climb aboard this morning and head out of Barnegat Inlet in search of Morone saxatilis.

Joining Hotrod today were myself, Greg, Jason and special guest star and lure maker extraordinaire, Chris L.  TT^

Quite a few boats were gathered up just outside the inlet.  Rod saw some marks on the screen and we dropped our jigs.  First fish was on in short order, but it turned out to be a giant skate, which was quickly turned loose.  We had a few bumps and bitten tails before Greg finally found one of the right kind.  The icebreaker was probably about 24", but it was a promising start.

Unfortunately that was it for us for a while, so we decided to head north to look for birds or marks.  There wasn't much of either as we continued north.  We eventually found ourselves off of Seaside Heights and the Casino Pier.  What I had already seen in pictures seemed much worse as we surveyed the catastrophe in person.  We took a few pictures of our own and then started looking for fish again.

A few birds here and some excellent marks there produced nothing.  And with the sun starting to get lower in the sky we decided to head back.  We all agreed it was good to finally get back on the water even though the fishing wasn't that great.  But, we weren't done yet.

When we got to the inlet, Rod set us up on the north side of the north jetty.  As he held the boat steady and close to the rocks, we cast shads and plugs into the white water.  It was game on!

It wasn't long before everyone aboard had a bent rod and a striper in the boat.  None were huge.  A few shorts and a few keepers were caught (although we released everything).  Size didn't matter though as the worries and anxiety of the past couple of weeks were replaced with smiles and high fives! clp

It was another great day on the Phyllis Ann!  Thanks Rod. We all need this.  t^  Oh, and you owe me a new pair of jeans. :P

It was a nice day on the water, with a great group of guys. I had a good time, and hope to do it again.

My second striper was on one of those famous ChrisL plugs.

I was even rewarded with a Hudson River Foundation tagged fish. Got the tag in an envelope and will go out tomorrow.  Can't wait to get the details of the fish when it was tagged. Only my second tag ever, first was a fluke.

First off,  huge THANKS to Rod for the invite.  It was some much needed time away from life on land.  Thanks Rod  t^
Great job by Capt and crew today.  The fish was just the icing on the cake.   It was  nice to watch Gregg hook up on one of my plugs too.
It's a wonder we caught fish today considering someone brought a banana for lunch "I like a banana"....but I won't mention that his name was Bob.  :-X  Oppps

t^ nice job fellas. I hope to get out there before winter.
Its better to sit in a boat and think about God, than to sit in a church and think about fishing.
