Hudson Canyon was like fishing in a bath tub on 9/13 to 9/14 I was able to put 16 guys together for an annual Tuna Trip on the Gambler. We had everything in our favor, weather, cold beer, live squid no tuna. The canyon was lit up like a Christmas tree. One sword lost at the gaff then dead silence for 8hrs Morning came tried jigging, live squid,Mahi Mahi strips, butter fish,no hits no runs.
Captain Bob tried his best searching around pots in the morning. Trolling back we raised 4 Marlin hooked two one big blue 500# who ran for 10 seconds before breaking off as well as the second. Some tile fish picked off the bottom up to 10 lbs. Heart breaking but at the same time we had some great laughs through out the night. Tuna did school the surface breaking water but had no intrest in baits, jigs or the troll. Not sure if the moon had played a part in it,there was none???
With current weather fluctuations fishing remains solid throughout the shore line. Aboard Captain Dave the Louis Scribelli Party from Whitehouse Station. Capt Kevin took this group for a try for blues.Chumming heavily, some blues were boated and some big sand
sharks were on hand to spice things up.
My good buddy Ron McClelland from the Hi-Mar Fishing club went down to Myrtle Beach to pick up and bring back his Mother-in-law's car and managed a couple of days fishing while he was there so before he left he called Captain Mike McDonald of Gul-R-Boy guide service, out of Georgetown South Carolina, and booked two days fishing.
Since there was fishing involved his buddy Greg decided to go along. Day one involved meeting Capt. Mike at the ramp, at 6:30am, and a run across the bay to net up some Bunker, both Peanuts and adults, Mullet, and shrimp. After filling both live wells Capt. Mike dropped anchor in one of his honey holes and we proceeded to cast live baits towards the edges of the weeds, for Speckled Trout and Reds. Capt. Mike baited a larger outfit with a bunker head and put it out toward the channel.
After a few trout, the bait was picked up by something larger, Greg picked up the other end, Mike picked up the anchor, and the battle was on. After a little grunting and groaning, Greg managed to bring a Ray of about 50# to the boat.
Back to another location but this time when the bigger outfit started running off it was Ron’s turn. He grabbed the rod and mostly just stood there watching the spool of line get smaller and smaller while an effort was made to get the boat moving. Well, he did get to see a tarpon jump, in the distance. It appeared to be a nice size fish, over 100lbs. The fish landed on the line, snap, and the battle was over.
Day two was pretty much nonstop catching for the day. With a total of 65 trout, 15 flounder and 9 ladyfish caught, with most released to fight another day. Just 10 Trout short of breaking Capt. Mike's catch record. Oh, by the way, water temps 85 -86
The Frank Hettler Party was aboard for a Southern Speedster trip to the Barnegat Ridge; although the weather was spectacular the bite was anything but. It was time to go to plan "B" with Frank, Gina, and Tom agreeing to try some wreck fishing; well it wasn't long before they were rewarded with bent rods and non stop action with sea bass, blackfish and even a nice throw back 4 1/2lb fluke scored by Tom.
The Dynamic Duo of Joe Holl and Dom DiNapoli were out to slam some blues [1- 4lbs] at the inlets north jetty in the early am in hopes of some pre season stripers. The blues attacked at almost every cast but no bass were found. From there it was off to some wrecks for some more non stop action with a mix of sea bass, blackfish, porgies and even a double header throw back fluke, caught by Dom. They also witnessed a sizable shark roaming the surface not to far from the boat but ignored any thing thrown at him.
Steve Ezzel of Colorado with father in -law Sunny Owns and Uncle Wayne Otts of Arkansas were on board for a slam fest which included a Barnegat Bay Grand Slam scored by Steve, striper, weakfish, blue, and fluke. The guys had non stop action with blues 1-6lbs attacking everything and anything but also scored stripers and fluke as well. From there it was time to score with sea trout/ weakfish around the western side of the bay to 3lbs. Capt. Steve Reel Fantasea Charters 609 - 290 - 1217

Did You Know? There are two bills pending before the State Senate and Assembly. A3275 ans S2041. If pass these bills would change the makeup of the Fish and Game council and make it POLITICAL APPOINTMENTS. This alone is bad enough another provision of the bills is to DO AWAY WITH THE CURRENT PROVISIONS IN THE STATE FISH & GAME CODE WHICH PROVIDES FOR THE PUBLIC'S USE AND DEVELOPMENT OF NJ'S WILDLIFE FOR RECREATIONAL AND FOOD SUPPLIES.
IF THESE BILLS PASS IT IS GOODBYE TO HUNTING AND FISHING IN NEW JERSEY.
All State Assembly seats and 40 Senate seats are up for reelection this year, sponsors of the bills are Assemblyman Panter and Senator Carcher both 12th district. There is a new (Political Action Committee) "New Jersey Outdoor Alliance"
www.njoutdooralliance.org. They are leading the fight against these bills.
Please take time to either write or email your districts legislators to state your opposition.
