Any suggestions for targeting sea bass and keeping the dreaded porgie bite to a minimum? 5hrug

I usually don't pull on the small bites.  Wait for the bigger pull of the seabass then slam it home.   Have patience, it pays off.   t^

Irish is  right.. larger bait will keep the porgies off.
Fish out of Toms River NJ.
Call Nick for open boat, 973-417-5756, or on Channel 68.

Welcome Aboard fin,

I fish from the surf so I don't have too much trouble with them critters.

But I am sure that the guys will give you tons of ideas to ponder over.

Again Welcome Aboard.

Happy Catching

Porgies will just pick away at larger baits.

Use jigs like AVA, chrome balls, soft plastic for seabass.  Killies, spearing, bergall strips too.

Why dis the scup?  Some real nice sized ones out there and they put up a good fight on light tackle.  Fillet a few, fry em up, and enjoy!!! TT^

Exactly what "gottog" said above.

One thing you can do is move off that wreck/structure and try another if you only want sea bass (move more east this time of year). I do this when croakers have taken over an area as well.

I catch and release porgies but action is action ...

Good luck,

Capt. Ed

Porgies = GOOD sushi (from what I hear). I have yet to catch one big enough to try.

Try using 'bug's (fiddler crabs) for sea bass bait. IMHO one of the best baits there is for sea bass and haven't had a porgy yet try to eat one.

Killies are another good sea bass bait but with the end of fluke season you might have to catch your own as I'm sure most B&T shops aren't stocking them anymore.

My nephew Luba Sea laughed at me but I use chicken gizzards for sea bass, cut in half and
once put on hook can't be ripped off so easy.
You won't have to keep rebaiting the hook after every fish caught. Nick say's it not natural but it works.

I'm going to be sea bass fishing Sunday so I'm planning on gathering up a bucket of fiddler crabs Saturday. If anyone wants to join in collecting them (for their own use)-drop me an email or PM and I'll tell you where you can join me.

I've caught porgies on crabs quite a few times.  Hey, when they're thick, they gonna eat everything.

Will say that the last few times out bottom fishing, where we caught seabass the porgies weren't around and vice versa.

Fiddlers...might need them for something else ;)
