8/24 Trip
« on: August 24, 2013, 06:54:20 AM »
With the boat repaired from last week's breakdown I was ready to get out on the water again. I trailered the boat back to the marina and had her in the water by 0730 with no issues at all.

We left the dock and headed North to the Mud Hole area looking for toothy critters. Setup the slick and shortly thereafter saw a shark finning the surface. Without exageration I put this one at about 10' but, I couldn't get a good look to see what it was. It was thick and very gray over white.... Don't think it was a blue dog. Bull, small white maybe? Who knows....

We didn't like the drift as it was pushing us over the pots and into shallow water. Made a move to the East side of the hole. On that drift our close line scream but, nothing came tight. All out of chum we decided to drift just a little bit more. As I was ready to call it the mid line screams. I come tight and after a short fight a fiesty mako pup of about 30# is at the boat. We safely released it and headed towards home with the plan to check out the bluefish grounds.

Hit an area near Augie's and marked some fish. Worked the area for a few blues and what I think was a Bonito but, not 100% sure. This fish had vertical bands, narrow/pointy snout, with small teeth. For some reason I thought they had horizontal markings.... ??

With things to do in the evening we headed in. Saw a bunch of bunker pods on the way in and stopped at one where they were being chased. IF we had the time we would've dropped the big lines again but, couldn't. Of course we saw a shark in the area, although it didn't appear to be table fare.

Made it home with nothing the eat but, we kept the skunk off of the boat.

Nice day. Bet the little mako looked really cute  ;D got a picture of the tuna like fish? I was thinking its either a bonito, false albacore, or skipjack tuna, but all of those have some sort of horizontal lines and not vertical  5hrug

I was thinking the same species but, looking at pictures I can identify it. I had caught 2 and they were definitly in the tuna family. Of course I didn't take a picture.

Yeah, the mako was "cute" and pissed!

Yeah, probably a bonito although, I thought it's stripes were thicker and more vertical.... Maybe that fish didn't read the book?

Nice trip Fred.
More than likely you had a bonito. They have been mixed in with the blues and in the very area where you caught it.

I will be hitting the mud hole tomorrow for some toothy critters. Hope to bring one back to the dock with us.

Its better to sit in a boat and think about God, than to sit in a church and think about fishing.
