Irish Ayes Striper Scout Trip 10/15/13
« on: October 15, 2013, 08:20:42 PM »
I got the word late last night.  Capt. Joe had been cooped up too long with all this wind and high seas.  He asked if I wanted to head out on a scouting mission for some stripers in the morning.  Um... Yeah!  Duh! ;D

Joe, Bob G, Jim and myself left the dock around 8:00.  With the conditions being the way they were, no one had gotten out for the past week (including the party boats).  So, we had no idea what we would find.  Today's forecast called for another high wind day.  It was sloppy in the early morning, but got progressively better as the forecasted 20 mph gusts never materialized.

Joe stopped on some marks right outside the inlet, but there was nothing going on.  So, we headed north trying to find some life.  We saw quite a few pods of dolphins feeding and some scattered bird play.  We stopped and jigged on a few more spots, but came up empty.

We went pretty far north before Joe broke out the trolling gear.  We trolled for a bit without a sniff.  Spying a little larger concentration of diving birds nearby, we pulled in the trolling gear and Joe sped over to them.  Jigs out.  After Bob G snagged a feisty 5" bergall I set the hook on one of the target species.  It might have made it into the box if we squeezed it.  27.99".  It was returned to fight another day.  After that I caught a seabass, which was also returned.

Next Bob G connects with an AVA jig.  It's a fat one!  36".  Joe nets it and it goes in the cooler.  I jigged up another seabass before hooking up with another good fish.  This one fought hard, taking drag and digging for the bottom before I turned it's head and got it along side the boat.  With a deft scoop, Joe put this one on the deck as well.  Two for dinner!

We jigged around for a little while longer with no more bites before heading for home.  It was a gorgeous day on the water.  We weren't expecting too much after that seven day blow.  The three we caught were a nice bonus.

Judging by the way things looked out there, the fall striper season appears ready to explode any day now.  pcrn

It was great fishing with Joe, Bob and Jim.  Thanks for having me aboard Joe. t^

Nice day on the water. Some fish for the dinner plate and fishing with some good friends, can't ask for a better day than that.  chrz

Catch em up Thursday Tom. If I had a crew I'd be heading out also. Will be hitting it Friday and probably both weekend days.  TT^

Its better to sit in a boat and think about God, than to sit in a church and think about fishing.

I'll be taking a couple of guys out onto the sand on Monday.  There was a 15+ pounded caught in Seaside Park today.  Can't wait to get back out after getting the beach buggie fixed.

Happy Catching
