A settled weekend coming up weatherwise, but water conditions won’t be so lucky. This weekend looks to be dry and sunny with average temperatures. There will be a mix of sun and clouds. High temperatures will be in the upper 40’s to upper 50’s with overnight lows in the 30’s and 40’s. Sunday will be the warmer of the two days and coastal and southern areas will have warmer overnight lows than the rest of the state. Inland Saturday will have light west winds 5-10 mph and Sunday will have some breezier conditions with west winds 10-15 mph and possible higher gusts. Coastal areas will have continued gusty winds all weekend with Saturday Night and Sunday the windiest with winds to 20 mph. Water conditions should be good on Saturday, however there is a chance that winds and seas left over from Thursday and Friday will carry over into Saturday, especially Saturday Morning and Afternoon. By later Saturday Night and Sunday winds will gust in excess of 20 knots, up to 30 knots with seas on the ocean 3-6 feet. Small Craft Advisories are likely by Saturday Night through Sunday. Surf and beach conditions will be good to ok. Despite the gustier winds on Saturday Night into Sunday, surf will not increase too much due to the westerly winds keeping the waves down. However, winds on Saturday Night and Sunday will gust to 30 knots from the west. Water temperatures are in the mid 50’s to low 60’s, with ocean waters warmest to the south and offshore. UV Index will be Low to Moderate at 2-3/15 (even on the sunniest day, UV indices will not reach above a 4 or 5 from now through winter until the start of spring)
High pressure will build in from the west and persist through the weekend. A low pressure system will cross to the north of the region on Sunday. High pressure will then move eastward over the region, sliding to the southeast on Monday. A stronger cold front will move across the region Monday Night into Tuesday. A potential storm system could affect the region around midweek.
Next week will start off dry and by Tuesday Night chances of rain/showers will start. Rain chances are likely through the end of the week. There could be a Nor’Easter/Coastal Storm on Thursday that could bring rains, snow, high winds and coastal flooding to the region. The models are not in agreement on this storm, however, they have all been trending a storm over the last 3 days. This is still a ways out to pinpoint or be concerned about anything, but 40-60 knot winds, 24+ inches of snow for interior parts of the country (West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania in higher elevations), 1-2 foot coastal flooding and a mix of rain to snow in NJ from 6 inches to nothing are possible at this point. The track of this storm will depend what the area sees. Main concern is that MANY of the trees across the region still have leaves on them. We all know what 6-12 inches of snow on trees can cause, so keep that in the back of your mind!! I will update this situation as it nears or becomes more definitive on what we should expect. Right now water conditions are not looking great all week, with possible Small Craft Advisories, gusty winds and elevated seas all week. Monday may be ok, depending on how quickly everything settles down after this weekend’s blow, but the remainder of the week looks iffy at best. Surf and beach conditions will not be the greatest either, however it will be ok through Thursday when it will become cautious to hazardous. Much more to come over the weekend.
