I think that's how the commercial guys up in Mass. fish for Stripers. Wire line with jigs on the bottom.

I once saw a guy who held on to the rod no problem on a much bigger and harder fighting fish (a Bluefin tuna) for a very long time, only to bounce the rod on the deck and overboard when he lost it. ;D
