Scanned through the forum and didn't see this previously posted. Looking to determine if adding the hydrofoil stabilizer blades to an outboard would be beneficial as we moved up the size of the motor for the boat by 50HP(within boat specs). Do they help to plane the boat and keep front planing down as they claim they are designed to do? Are hole shots better and do they help prevent the "porposeing effect". Appreciate any feedback, never used them before but want to get the most out of the new motor going on the boat....

I had one on my small bowrider the difference was very noticeable
Its better to sit in a boat and think about God, than to sit in a church and think about fishing.

Had one on a smaller outboard years ago on an aluminum skiff I bought. It worked. It was on the motor when I bought and left it on.

Not sure if it would work as well on a larger outboard.

IMO, a cavitation plate isn't designed to see that kind of stress.

What motor did you get?

Hey Duffman, it's a 2003 Yamaha 250HP, FI. I  saw a YouTube video where the guy mounted a clamp on version by Stingray( no bolts or holes in the cavatation plate) to the plate of a 300HP Yamaha...

Mike do you have trim tabs on the boat? If so, I would not add a stabilizer .
Just my 2 cents.  ;D

Nice! 2 Stroke HPDI?

Still don't like the hydrofoil, whether its a bolt or clamp on.

Others may feel differently, but I don't think a cav plate was designed for pressure like that.

Skip, No trim tabs unfortunately or wouldn't want to add this as the option. Duff-V MAX HPDI
We worked it into our pricing that the marina is installing our new prop spec'd specifically for the motor

I have used them on 4 boats. Not all of the do then same thing. The old stingray stabilizer that require drilling will help stop porpoising like all of them do and help get on a plane faster. I believe they have the lift like an airplane wing and some people do not lose any speed with those. However they can also lift the bow on some smaller boats (under 2500 lbs) to help get the proper attitude. I had a problem stoping the porpoising on my 20 aqua sport after repowering with a heavier motor. I ended up with smart tabs but it was either prone to porpoising or the bow was pushed down and couldn't hit the sweet spot. I ended up a year later adding the hydrofoil and kept the smart tabs. The boat has never run so good. I can lift the bow without porpoising now or push the bow down when the are bigger wakes or waves. I also picked up two miles per hour.

they are actually used on smaller boats that don't have the benefits of having the trim tabs.  It is a good alternative though, but if you are accustom to having trim tabs, you will hate them.
