Sea Trial Screw on 10/10
« on: October 11, 2007, 01:42:20 PM »
Had my sea trial on wenesday down at Coty Marine. Seaswril 2101DC 150 Yamaha 4 . Boat was nice, handled well, but could do better with 200HP. Was told the trailer that was on the ramp was matched to the boat. Upon return, the salesman at the helm ran the boat onto the trailer but it did'nt sound right. Powered it on up but the boat was'nt sitting right. We got out to find the trailer was NOT matched to the hull and the bow gelcoat was ripped up from the metal tounge of the trailer. 5hrug They said they would fix everything. Went to  see the paperwork, and the numbers were higher than stated on Saturday :o Told them I would have to think about it and walked. Got home to find an E-mail from my Allstate agent. Seems me made a mistake on the insurance quote he gave me on Monday and that the actual premium was Double :o of what was quoted. Guess I'll be looking for a new agent too. <'((((><

Hi Fishin Dude,

Sorry to hear all this mess. I had a deal go bad recently as well. For something so expensive, one would think that it would go a lot smoother.

Good luck and I am sure you will make the right decision for your situation!

Go buy a nice slightly used boat (2005 or newer) w/ engine warranty and DO NOT use ALLSTATE. They will not cover overheats udner any circumstance.
Why buy new only to be treated like that.

Let someone else take depriciation hit. After 1 season or 2 all the gremlins wil have been worked out leaving you a nice rig.

I have Inamar via Charter Lakes and they were not only cheaper, but cover just about EVERYTHING.
PM me if you want my brokers info.

I have 500k liability, 15k boat value (no depreciation), etc for $430 or so for the year (inculdes spill coverage, etc).

sORRY TO HEAR ABOUT YOUR ISSUES.

Sorry  to hear that Fishin Dude I know you were pumped. But better it happened when it did! I know you mentioned the motor seemed under powered for the boat. I know when I bought my 23ft Seaswirl in 2001. The boat came standard with a 150 HP Johnson Ocean Pro, after reading different reviews that was one of the biggest complaints was it was under powered with the 150, I upgraded to the 200 hp and with a full crew of four plus a full tank of fuel (105 gallons) I still feel under powered.

fishing dude,, take it as an omen to walk away from coty. not so much walk away from seaswirl, but walk away from coty. goes to show that whole place is run by  a group of incompetent people. sure they can fix it, but why buy damaged goods for the price of new?

next closest seaswirl dealer i belive is in delaware.

i have an 06 striper w/a with the 150. does fine with that motor for a fishing boat. love the striper and think its a good quality boat for the price. just a damn shame you have to buy it from such a bad place.

I've heard that Coty is bad news as well.  State Farm did well for insurance on the '01 May-Craft I just bought.  $200 per year for an 18-footer.  Not bad.

WEll, it doesn't surprise me with Coty, thats for sure.  BUT, you do have negotiating room now. Remember, its a leftover and they need to move it for the new models.  And as for the insurance, try Boat US..

my buddie has a 23" walk-a-round seaswirl with a 150 yammy, didn't move out of the way.. he upgraded to a 200, and now it moves at a good 43mph on flat seas.  Not bad at all.  Make sure the boat you get isn't undersized with the engine, especially if your fishing the ocean.  If your mostly a bay fisherman, then it doesn't matter much.  But if the ocean turns on you, make sure you have enough juice to get back.

Sorry about the raw deal you got from your boat dealer and insurance agent.  Some things just ain't right.

Just an FYI.
If you go to Delaware to buy the boat, you won't pay sales tax then, but when you register it in New Jersey Motor Vehicles will hit you up for the tax.
Think twice if the dealer tries to talk you into registering the boat in Delaware.  The dealer will tell you that you will save on sales tax.  That you will, BUT, if you keep the boat in NJ the State Police, Marine Division, will ticket you and you will then have a fine AND the NJ State Sales Tax to pay.  Not worth the hastle.

As part of my job, I went to a Marine Law Enforcement class that the State Police put on.  During their slow times, the Marine Police Officers (Troopers) motor around marinas and check for Delaware registrations on the boats.  I know this for a fact, I was with them when they did that.  They will then contact the owner and send them a summons for improper registration.  They will also notify Motor Vehicles about the sales tax and you will hear from them.

when I bought my boat from Coty, they had it delivered to the Coty in Perth Amboy, when I actually bought it from the one in Toms River.. They said that I would save money having it delivered to Perth Amboy, I think it was a sales tax thing, but I don't remember.

Luna, there are places in NJ where the sales tax was 3% instead of the old 6%.  These were areas where the state wanted the business to prosper because they were not getting many sales and the state thought this would help the local businesses.  If you picked up/paid for the item in the lower sales tax area, you would save half of the normal sales tax.

In Delaware, as in a few other states, out of state buyers of big ticket items don't pay sales tax.

Weird about the Delaware thing.  I wonder how they can legally do that, assuming your Delaware registration is legal.  Sounds like one of those laws where they threaten people just enough and keep the fine just low enough that no one spends the money to challenge it.

I once bought a computer in Delaware to save the sales tax.  I was in the market for one, and happened to be in Delaware visiting a friend, so I stopped in the local Best Buy and saved a ton.

Turbo, the Delaware thing is this.  When you have a boat that is principally berthed/used in NJ you need to have it registered in NJ.  Same as a car, if the car is principally garaged in NJ then it must be registered here.

If you move in from out of state you have "x" amount of days to register in NJ.

Perth Amboy. Great! Perth Amboy is an Erban Enterprise Zone, 3 1/2% state sales tax. Saves 3  1/2 % . Also have been in contact with a dealer in Virgina and am waiting to hear back from one in North Carolina( a boat and a mini vacation all in one). Thanks again everyone.  t^ <'((((><

not to mention all the bull repairs that will need to be done...  Trust me, a boat is so much fun, and I wouldn't trade boating in for the world, but it is a money pit.
