Lesson learned
« on: December 01, 2013, 09:03:38 PM »
What a great way to start the tog season. Got the call early in the week to head down south to fish with my good friend Rob. Due to a very busy work schedule this was the first chance I had to get out. A stacked roll on the way out made for an uncomfortable but tolerable ride out right into the rising sun. Didn't take long after the hook t of take dropped to get em going. Capt putting a clinic on showing us how to put keepers in the boat while I set a steady pace of fish but not the size I was looking for then it happened that unmistakeable THUD! Followed by a good swing and it was game on did a good job getting him off the piece and up a fathom and then he bull dogged me right back down. He must have taken me over something sharp cause it cut the 50lb like butter. It's time to finally admit it and beef up my tog gear. About an hour later another monster pulled me in after I got him off the piece 2 in one day I'm a believer!!!!! Great day with a lot of fillets for the table all on one stop. Ocean laid down for a beautiful ride home. I'll be shopping for a new toy tomorrow!

Kenny, I'm using a 7' med action shimano terez which is ok the rod is a beast but I have a Calcutta 200 with 30lb braid. I love the setup just not enough drag on the 200. I would really like to match it with a 14a Trinidad but boy that's a dip into the piggy bank. Any suggestions see a lot guys. using Avets but hear mixed reviews.

Not enough drag? You should lock that baby up, go with heavier braid and I like two rod lengths of good quality 60# leader, something like Momoi  Diamond. Just my opinion. Avets, fact is bearing issues. Mine gave out at 11 months and they are NOT covered by the warranty. Cheap and simple to replace yourself,  but I feel they should last longer. I guess it depends on how often the reel is used. Google it, it seems to be a common problem.
I've spent most of my life fishing, the rest I've just wasted     <'((((><

Fishing Dude, thanks I heard the same thing about the bearing issue and I use the crap out of my equip. so really want something reliable. You double your leader up? And use the loop thru with the overhand to lock it In I guess. I've landed plenty of goof fish with my setup but just don't want to lose anymore of those big boys due to underrated gear! Thanks again I'll post what I decided to go with.
