Just waiting for Ash to post his report.  I hope he gained a better feeling for the surf.  Now all we have to do is get him into fish. 

He has a real nice set up now and is casting like a champ.  I wish him success with it.

Paul, I'd like to thank you again for a great day!

Paul basically hit on many of the points of the trip.

Couple of observations.  The right gear makes all the difference!  I was amazed at how much I could do with 1/2 the effort.  Prior to our trip to Grumpy's I had been baitfishing with a cheapie boxstore combo.  All it took was a smooth, fluid casting motion to get casts that before took so much grunting and effort to get out!  Unbelievable.

Paul was a patient as he could be as I picked his brain for whatever information that I could.  We went over reading beach structure, types of lures, jigs, poppers, etc., equipment and techniques. 

The advantage of fishing with someone knowledgeable was priceless as up until then, I had mostly been teaching myself as I went along.

Paul, it was a pleasure meeting you.  Fishing with you was a priveledge and I thank you for it.

I hope to meet you, and others here, for some more of this in the time to come!  We'll gettem next time...

i got to say.....i've never bought an "expensive" set-up. i usually buy combos, mostly at wal-mart, the latest, at Dick's. i got a 12' shakespeare rod and reel combo for 39.95. i've enjoyed good luck with it all year. the only thing i changed was the line, i spooled it with re power pro. my best striper was caught on an "okuma" 10' rod i found at the late manahawkin flea market for 19 dollars, and the reel was purchased from walmart for 39.95. i dont think price has anything to do with it. sure, the pole is probably lighter, maybe it feels better fighting a fish, but i'm not switching unless i hit the numbers

Either way, I'm not catching fish, so I'd rather be comfortable while doing it! 

Seriously though, I'm sure much of it is me doing things wrong.  No high-$ rod/reel outfit is going to fix that.  Having said that, I can honestly say that I feel much more confident and comfortable now.

Still have a 10' Shakespeare for bait fishing and have no intention of replacing it.

Hi Ash,

I am glad you enjoyed yourself.  I had a blast and just to let you know there were very few if any fish caught that day off the surf.  I went back over to Grumpys in the evening and talked to Paul so it was not totally our fault or the way we were fishing.

They were just not on the bite.  Too much bait in the water that day.  I think the birds were even having a tough time picking out which school of bait to hit first.  Sort of like a kid in a candy store with a pocket full of change.

I believe the bays are finally emptying themselves of all that bait they have been holding onto for so long.

I hope the weather changes soon or I thing I'm going to start growing gills.

Absolutely correct.  You can not beat learning from someone with experience.  Even if it is no more than just watching the guy who is catching and emulating what he is doing.

Hi All,

Well this cabin fever is getting to me.  I am going to make an attempt to get out in the morning today and see what happens.  I was over at Ortley Beach Tuesday and the bait is so thick all up and down the beach it is amazing.

Not many on the beach when I was over there in the afternoon I could only see 3 anglers from Brick beach to the SSP pier.

If I did not have my dog with me I might of tried for about an hour or so but it was too snotty so I passed that up.

If I don't get out later it does not look good till Monday. bngh

I hate this weather pattern.

Hi All,

Went out this morning and I virtually had the beach all to my self.  I started using a yellow and black striper striker because of the cloudy day, nothing.  I switched to an AVA and the same nothing.  I then tried a Krockadile and picked up two fluke by the surf club in Ortley.

I drifted back north and not much happened but as soon as I started to snag sand eels i switched over to the Deadly Dick and again nothing but snagged eels.  The surf was loaded with them even though it was snotty out there.

I think the only thing that will break this deadlock is a good NE wind.

I went over to Grumpys and saw a number of stripers being weighed in caught off a boat they ranged from just under 10# to slightly over 27# and I counted 5 all together.  Nice catch guys.  I am assuming they were caught off IBSP.

Hi All,

Well it looks like a real snotty weekend might be in store.  I hope the weather man is wrong for Sunday guys.  I wish you luck.

I will be trying the beach in the late morning it looks like the best day for me to get out.  I am going down to tie up a couple new patterns for later today.  I noticed that the sand eels coloring is getting lighter so I have to tie a lighter pattern.  Going with a pearl and gold flash with very little red on the under belly.  I will be using a 2/0 red hook by gami. I will let you know how it works out.

I will post the pictures in the other thread under Flies, Teasers, Plugs, Jigs & Rigs, look for it there.

I don't think tomorrow will be to productive, the wind is suppose to be out of the west around 10 to 15 mph.  Maybe I should bring the fly rod along, the wind is in the right direction.  Not sure how the wave action is I haven't been out there today.  Too many honey do's
