Sewing Canvas boat cover

Anyone have any tips on Sewing canvas? In my infinate wisdom this weekend, i managed to tear my boat cover.....  I have extra canvas material....but not quite sure what type of thread / needle to use to sew on the patch....

Couldnt think of a better bunch of guys to ask  t^

Polyester thread.  Needles size 19/120, 20/125 or 21/130.
