striper caught on chicken!
« on: October 24, 2007, 08:12:24 AM »
went to LBI to do some surf fishing last nite. in my haste to get there, i grabbed the wrong bait out of the reach in freezer. got to the beach, set up, went to bait up, i have the crab bait! what the heck, sorta looks like clam. threw a big piece on, set it out. what do you know, 5 minutes later, my pole goes nuts! set the hook, the thing jumps, can clearly see its a smal striper, a few more cranks and he gets off. go to re-bait, and in my excitement, didnt realize the seagulls made off with the rest of the chicken. i wouldnt believe it if someone told me, but my best friend was right there, he saw it too! :o

In south Jersey the guys use chicken for fluke bait.  It works for that, hmmm...

Do some testing and set up two poles.  One with chicken and one with clam, see if either one produces better than the other.  May find a good use for old chicken.   TT^

I know a lot of guys that use chicken liver for Stripers in the Delaware around Trenton and it out produces everything.

I've also heard of chicken being used for weakfish.

I'll have to give it a shot...I'll confess that I really hate using clams...they stink, are a pain to open, make a huge mess and don't stay on the hook well.

Also, be careful when handling raw chicken, it carries a lot of nasty stuff.

Hmmmmmmm..if cut chicken chunks work for schoolies, I may try targeting trophies by livelining   Rhode Island Reds this season..may need to rig up some kinda beak snorkel to keep 'em lively..Just think of the possible fringe benefits..instead of a stinky livewell at the end of the day you may be rewarded with nice fresh eggs..I'll work on it and keep y'all posted!   TT^

reminds me of a story my dad told me that when he was young.he and a friend went carp fishing using corn meal balls for bait, remind you this is an old story,Dad's been gone since 1983 and be over a 100 if still alive, back then a lot of people kept chickens.on the way back from fishing and not catching anything, his friend casted into a chicken pen with the corn meal bait and the chickens took it and was reeling in chickens over the fence.went fishing came home with chicken for dinner. ;D

No offense intended sir....just having a little fun..I absolutely believe a striper, or any fish for that matter would eat a piece of chicken at times..And you are certainly to be commended for trying it, and not letting the fact that you grabbed the wrong bait wreck your day..well done..I just get wild thoughts sometimes  ;D

Treebeard,
That was funny.  I can imagine trying to hook up the bait.
