Rod building question
« on: October 21, 2014, 05:21:35 PM »
I was wondering what is the right way to do the finish on a under wrap. Do you under wrap and then attach the eye and wrap it and then apply the coating? Or coat the under wrap first and then attach the eye and wrap. I'm using a D size metallic thread.

Should I thin the coating first or use it as is?

I am assuming you are using a two part epoxy such as Flex Coat. I do not thin. Apply as is.

Another question. After the first coat of finish on the base wrap I have a few dimples were the thred was pulled. I have to wrap the eyes yet so I was thinking about scotch brighting the finish befor installing the eyes and then applying the second coat. What do you guys think?

Just slice the bumps off with a sharp razor blade, wrap your guides on and apply you next coat. No Scotch or Scotch-Brite  ;D

Guids are on and I got the new Black thred from Bullard Int. to do it with.

Question on coatings. Can I top coat with D-2 (Diamond II) over the Pro-Koat? Is there any difference?

Yes I have used diamond 2, hut I have never applied it on top of flex coat. I have read, heard other folks appling different epoxies on top of
one another, but I have not done it.

Think Ill just stick to Flex Koat this time and then try the D-2 on the next build. To far into this to have something go south. ::)
