Rod Building
« on: November 15, 2007, 01:41:54 PM »
Gentlemen,

I'm heading towards the light at the end of my tunnel!!!!!  One more soccer game away from the end of the season, fall ball is over and work is slowing down!!!

My winter fishing plans are to get deep into the world of rod building that Ed & I got into last March.

Anyone else plan on building any rods??

When I do start my project I will post some pics.  Hopefully everyone else will do the same.

- Dennis

P.S. its great to see this site alive.

Hi Dennis,

Nice to see you posting again.  I am not sure if I will be doing any large scale building over the winter but I have one in the back of my mind and that if to build a conventional surf rod.  I would love to get back into that mode once again.  Especially with the new braids out there today.

What I am trying to do is get all my power tools up again to stare making some plugs over the winter.  I have replenished quite a few over the summer but they are getting pretty beaten up.  Plus I would like to try a few new ideas I have floating in the back of my mind.

Good luck and looking forward to your posting as well.

Happy Catching

Paul

I have never built a rod, but would like to learn.  I understand there are some classes at the shore area that are good.

Since I will be retiring in February I will have a lot of time on my hands over the winter.  Building a rod would be a great way to pass the time.

Any suggestions on classes?

I have built a few rods, but I haven't done it in a loooong time.  It is definitely a cool thing to do though!

I never took lessons, but I hear that one of the Bogans (think it is Kevin) over at Brielle B&T does some pretty good classes over the winter.  Both novice and advanced.

Have Fun! ;D

Hi All,

I know Paul over at Grumpys runs classes you might try them.  I know there are a lot of places that sell material and equipment.  Brielle Bait & Tackle is one of them.  They have about 1/3 of the store devoted to rod building.  That is where I usually go.

If your not sure where it is, it is next to the 35 bridge on the Brielle side almost under the bridge but on its west side.

The guys at grumpy's stock rod building supplies and I think hold classes if you stop in and talk to them.  I had my 5 year old in there wanting to build a rod with me for small sunfish and he gave me about $150 worth of stuff that had not sold for $25. Great guys, willing to share knowledge at no cost.  True fisherman.

Brielle Bait shop is right over the 35 bridge.  First turn off into Brielle will bring you to an intersection, make a right and go under 35.  Next stop sign and the shop is on the left.  Ive been in there to look and they definitely had stuff but did not talk to guys there for long.

I am an avid woodworker, would love to learn to build my own plugs... If you ever feel like elaborating let me know.

Sorry Joe.  I wish I had some stuff to give you.  When I had the B&T we had a rod wrapper there along with a rod dryer that could do four or five rods at once.

You don't need a professional rod wrapping machine though.  Before I had that I used to do the old thread in a coffee cup and then through a phone book method.  Its kind of primitive, but it works.

I may have some spools of thread left that you might be able to use.  When I get a chance I'll dig through some of my old stuff in the garage and let you know what I've got. ;D

I just started building again after taking about a 10 year break from it. My next project is a rod for my Avet SX. Gonna build it on the 7' Lamiglas Classic Inshore blank. ;D
