I know, if it was not for my wife I would only have a combo.  It was that way for most of my life.  Now we can make all the changes we want, we are the only oldies left except for a few aunts and uncles on my side and my wife's sisters.

It feels unusual and uncomfortable to have a birthday party.  Thats OK I will learn to live with it.

Nice! you guys tie some beauties. I tie some Buck Tail(Deer tail)on a 2/0,3/0,4/0 long shank Mustad in white or brown (cause thats the tail color)and have used and caught nice fluke while using them as teasers tied on a dropper loop 18-20'' off the bottom, or off a 2oz.Bucktail spro.BUT after seeing some of the others I will try to tie some different colors and styles. WHATs BEST WAY TO DYE THE HAIR ? Food color doesn't seem to work.

There are a few dies out on the market that should work but the only way I believe was to use natural coloring with an arsenic base.  Not very safe I would think.

The way I would dye them would be with RIT in a cold vinegar solution.  Plus I was told to bleach them first in a mild solution, bleach and water combo, it is suppose to make the color more vibrant?

Let us know if you try this.  I only have 1 buck tail left my cousin "fenwick", "Woj" NJ-Hunter.com, is an avid hunter and will be getting me a new supply hopefully this winter.  I am looking forward to using real bucktails again.

these are my fluke rigs, i first snell the english style hook  then wrap a nylon buck tail on it with a red thread. above it is 2 beads a spinner (indiana style) followed by two more beads, colors can be what ever choice you pick. i usually tie them with a chartruse tail with white beads or chartruse beads, i also tie a white tail with red beads and i tie a chartruse on top of white with a mix of beads. Caught a lot of fish with these rigs. bad side is when the blues are around i often have to take the spinner off cuz they just eat'em up

I have tried to tie them, I can handle everthing but wrapping, Drew really is a natural when it comes to tying

I love getting back into tying again.  I for got how much I enjoy it.  There is something about making your own lures and having fooled a  fish into thinking it was natural food.  It is hard to explain.

Hi All,

How many tie their own lures, rigs, teasers and flies?  Plus what type of equipment do you use.  I have found out that over the years you don't need expensive equipment to enjoy the are of tying.

You can pick up a Deluxe kit for less than $60.00 from Cabelas or Shark River Mail Order.  Pick up some good colored material and some thread and go to it.  If you need help just ask and I am sure there will be a number of us out here that can help.

In the next few days I will try to put up some pictures of my equipment so you can see how simple it really is.  I might even give a video a try I will have to see on that one though.

I picked up a fly vice and thread holder thingie at one of the tackle flea markets last year. 

I clamp a lure/hook into the vice, hold a bunch of hair or whatever material I am using against the lure/hook. I then wrap white, black or red thread around the hair/material onto the lure/hook.  I finish it off with several half hitches (mothing more than back turns on the line) and put clear or red nail polish over the thread.  This works to my satisfaction.

I am usually not a real stickler for a perfect wrap when I know chances are, I will be leaving the lure/hook in a bunch of structure before my creation will unravel.   

If I want a really quality wrap, I pass my lure/hook off to a friend who does an excellent job that will last.

That will work just fine Joe.  Something very simple to think about is getting a 5 minute epoxy and mix a small amount and apply it to the wraps works great and lasts quite a long period of time.

Hi Guys, I tie my own teasers out of bucktail and some old rod making threads I have left over (not enough to continue to use on rod building). Finish em off with some nail polish that better half has around that are not being used.I place the hook in an old table vise that my Dad gave me years ago;place the thread in a bobbin,sip on a glass of wine and make 6 to 9 in a quick night.
If you loose em who cares.They do catch fish.
QUESTION ?  What other material do you guys use, other than bucktail, and have you had success. Feedback Please. Thanks AJ

Hi AJ,

Here are a few I tied today.  I used white & yellow bucktail, blue flash, black flash, red and yellow hackels.

The hook is a 2/0 long shank offset barb that I adjust for little less offset.

All windings are set with thread sealer or nail polish.  If I like the pattern I will take the time to 5 min epoxy them.

I can only see the first one, it does look good. 

Did you pour the lead too?  I just received my mold for them jigs in the 5,6 & 8 ounce sizes.  I already had the 2,3 & 4 ounce mold.
I'll be a pouring fool shortly.
