trolling bunker spoons
« on: March 08, 2008, 11:08:54 AM »
Im looking to buy o few new set ups for trolling for bass.  I currently use my boat poles for pulling stretches but wanted something new to troll with.  I've never used wire line and want to expirement with spoons and different rigs this year.
Can anyone recommend a good line/reel/rod set up for this??
Also does anyone use planing boards??
Any insight or examples of what you use would be helpful.  Thanks in advance!!!

oh yeah....anything "economical" would definately help!!

Expect to drop a few hundred on wireline bunker spoon rods/reels.

You need hefty, but very whippy rods that will allow the spoons to flutter. They will also need to have guides that will stand up to wire line.

Usually tungsten carbide guides.

Try to give a little help......you don't need planners with wire as it drops approx 1' for every 10' of wire let out.

I have two rod set ups for trolling, for Bunker spoons I use 7 1/2' med/heavy action Ugly Stiks, I had the factory guides replaced to ceramic eyes, great action on the spoons.

For other trolling I use Penn 3140 7' Rods. On all rods I have Okuma Magma 30 reels. I like the longer rods for more action and feel.

I have 300' of SS wire on the reel backed with 40' test Floro Carbon. My leaders are 50-60' test Floro Carbon and are started at 14' and can be cut down as chaffed, etc.

We also have two Okuma Magma 30 reels spooled with 60' test Floro Carbon that we use for pulling strech plugs, etc. We just swap the reels on the poles.

TGT Takle has some great spoons both Bunker and a little smaller Herring spoons, both come in outstanding colors to match the hatch
Hope it helps t^

For bunker spoons I use the Seeker bunker spoon rod for wire line, BA 1153M-9' WL.  It is a nine foot rod with plenty of action.  You can see it pulsating as the spoon is working.
I match that with a Penn 4/0 metal spool reel.  I put backer on the reel and 300 feet of 40# monel wire. The wire is marked at 50 and 100 foot intervals so I know how much line is out.  As CaptBob said, extimate one foot down for every ten feet of wire in the water.

Put this outfit on either side of the boat with side riggers and get on the troll.  Watch the action of the rods to dictate your trolling speed.  You want the rods to be wiping back and forth.  If the rods stop the wiping action you either have picked up something on the spoons (grass, trash, etc) or you have changed trolling direction or have hit a spot with a different current, possibly because of a change in the bottom.  Pull the lines in or change your trolling speed so you get the action back on the rods.

Keep a constant eye on your depth finder.  You want to be close to the bottom with your spoons but not ON the bottom.  It is a major help to have experienced people in the cock pit to adjust the line as needed.  I can't tell you how many rigs I have lost because the bottom came up to grab my spoon.

Good luck.   t^
