If I am not mistaken there has been a moratorium put on taking Horseshoe Crabs.

"On May 15, 2006, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s 2-year moratorium on the harvest of horseshoe crabs in New Jersey went into effect. The efforts by Delaware and New Jersey were designed to address the immediate threat to red knot and other shorebird populations by allowing the horseshoe crab populations to recover."

Plus here is an article from the APP,

Am I reading the enviros correctly?  The red knot bird is eating up all the eggs thus deminishing the number of horseshoe crabs.  The enviros think this is correct?    Let the birds destroy the crab population, along with a fishery, but heaven forbid if the humans do anything...let the enviros feed the silly birds their (enviros) freakin eggs.   TT^

Just curious why you are looking for the horseshoes?

The only thing they are good for fishing wise are bait for eels and conch.  Other than that I believe the pharmaceutical field for some experimental drugs.

Not on my target for bait... 5hrug

when i was like 8 or 9 my family took me to Sea World. the instructor took a horshoe crab out of the tank, and put her hand right on the creepy-crawly lgs!. then she held it by the tail and showed us how to use it as a backscratcher!. ever since, when i go to the beach and they are out, i pick them up carefully, and do kind of the same thing, and all the kids that are around are amazed, and i think they all learn a little something. it's fun. one year i went "clamming", so to speak. we walked around the shallows of union beach with tube socks on. when you feel something hard, you reach down, and 90% of the time it's a clam. funny, the other ten percent it's a horshoe. funny, when i picked one of those up the guys i was with would be scared senseless. fun to watch a grown man run in waist deep water rofla
