new to saltwater fishing

I am new to the site and new to saltwater fishing I would like to get into mahi and/or shark fishing.  Is this possible without going more than 5 or maybe even ten miles offshore? If so where and what would you use for bait?

you have some time to get those as you will see sharks and mahi later in the season.  Sharks can be caught fairly close, mahi, the closest would be the mud bouy.  They are not the most targetest species for this area though.

I agree with Nick, get your feet wet and try for the species that are readable available at the time.  you will be able to read many posts on both species but if you are new to fishing I would concentrate on what many agree is one of the most sought after fish the Striped Bass.  Many of us have a ways to go on this elusive fish.  Yes many have caught but many will also tell you anything over 40# is a real trophy in any ones book.

Hey Cetani, what area do you fish out of?

Sharks June – August, about 16 plus miles for makos and threshers, although you can get threshers in the end of July beginning of August close to shore. Mahi not usually until August About 10 plus miles off shore.

Thanks for the quick response time fellas, I should have mentioned that we are going to test our ground on some blues and stripers.  That being said i have started to get a collection of topwater plugs and diamond jigs.  I have heard that daisy chaining live bunker is good for live bait or even chunks of bunker would work.  Is this correct?  One more question I keep hearing about this mudhole but no one seems to give an actual location, can someone help me out here.   Thanks agian!!

First off, welcome to the site. 

Blues and stripers are an excellent choice for those beginning to fish the salt arena.  Troll, chunk, live line or jig, they all work well.  Every one has their preference, try them all and go with the one or several you like.  Keep in mind, they do not all work all of the time or at all locations.

As far as the mud hole, that is nothing more than an extention of the Hudson.  Get any good chart and you will see the bottom contour leading away from the New York Harbour out many many miles, that is the mud hole.

After you have made, I believe, eight posts other areas of the forum will open to you.  In them forums are contact numbers for members and GPS numbers for excellent fishing locations.

Thanks again I have heard the term chunking is this using any type of cut up fish or one particular type (I understand that different things work for diff places/times/species etc) is there something that works in general better than others.

The term chunking refers to any type of fish that you would cut up and 'chunk' with.

For striped bass, adult bunker is the bait of choice for chunking.
