Welcome Aboard Rfvansaun,
First of all I am glad you found us. We are a no no nonsense board (for the most part), you will have to excuse some of the guys as we have been hit with cabin fever pretty bad. It will be over soon and we will be back to normal.
First of all What kind of equipment are you using for the jetties, as it will probably be just fine for the surf.
As you probably know from fishing th jetties is that most of the fish are caught close to the rocks, well from the surf that same truth holds true as well. Yes there are some times when you have to get out there but I would say 95% of the time all my fish have been caught between the outer bar and the shore line.
When I go out and I am not sure of the conditions I will bring along a number of rod lengths. They will range from 7'- 6" to 11' where most of the time I will probably go to my 7'-6" rod only because the bait is close to shore and the others would be over kill.
To give you further proof watch the surf fly rodders they are shooting line no further than 15 yards out. That should start you thinking.
As far as reels just make sure they are balanced to the rod and you should be good to go. I have mostly all spinning gear with two conventional one for real long casts Penn 525Mag and the other is a Shimano 2000GT Magmiumlite primely a fresh water reel but good enough for the flats in back of IBSP.
So you see I run the gamut in rods and reels but I have been at this for a long time.
Give me a run down on your equipment and I will give you a fair comment.
Again Welcome Aboard.
Please do not hesitate to ask any questions as that is what we are here for. I my self am constantly learning and asking questions. But please if you have anything to add about jetty fishing or fishing off piers by all means jump right in.
Happy Catching
Paul
