Mounting Rod Holders ?
« on: March 31, 2008, 06:54:46 PM »
I was thinking of mounting some extra rod holders on the back of my transom.  Self Tapping Screws..... is this the ticket or is there a better way.  I almost hate to drill holes in the transom, so I want to do it the best way.

yeah, I hate to do it, but I have a ton of room above the engins on the transom and I would like to utilize the space, but there is a part of me saying not to do it..

What is the transom made from, if it is fiberglass with gelcoat I would not use self tapping as the surface will crack and break off in pieces.  If there is wood under or in the transom you can pre-drill the holes, countersink the gelcoat area so the treads pass through.  Whatever you do put sealer around and in the hole before the screw.  If you can get the rear of the area bolt through is always better.  Obviously stainless or brass metal needed.

Here's an alternative.  You may recognize the mane from boat shows etc.  They are probably not as strong as drilling holes but it may suit you needs.

Assume you mead in front of the motors?  That would work but don't you have a live well there?  If you have access to the space I would through bolt them especially if there is any flex to the panel, wouldn't want you to load it up with rods and have it come loose in rough seas.  They would be gone for sure from that location.

Nick, If you are mounting rod holders on the transom I think you stated two set of four, which gives you eight rod storage.Keep in mind if you store rods in the transom, you have to work a fish around , or up and over those rods. How about up top somewhere on the t top ?   AJ

i would go with more rocket launchers on the top. where you wanna put them they will be off center, cause of the live well, and i think wont look so good. spend the extra bucks and get some clamp ons for the top, will look better and they wont be in the way.

looking at the picture, I was thinking to the right of the live well a set of 4 on the starboard/center side.

Do you have space either in front of or along the sides of the center console? If so, they would be out of the way and not hinder any walking a fish around the boat. As someone else mentioned, put them at the transom and they would be in the way of fishing.

they are nice and it looks like you have the room . the rod holders are not that deep where in big seas the poles can come out . I like the rod holders by  me just in case one wants to come out . maybe just add some tie downs on them . JUST DO ITTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT bngh bngh
