Striper Run
« on: April 14, 2008, 11:36:36 PM »
I was curious as to which way the Stripers run in the spring time? Are they running up stream or down stream. The reason I'm asking is because on the HRFA site they are talking about striper up in the Catskill region and were just starting to see them in the bay. And I guess the herring don't come out of the river? I always thought they run upstream to spawn in the spring.

Striped bass are what is known as "anadromous" (as opposed to catadromous).  This means they are born in fresh water rivers and streams, live their year in salt water, then return to the sweetwater in the spring to spawn again.  So they actually run upstream...spawn... then return to the ocean to continue their migration northward (they ran southward in the fall to chase the bunker and warmer water.)  Hope this helps.

Thats true plus there are a number of small fry that linger through the winter up here.  That is why you get a few almost all year long especially in the warmer back bays.
