Funky Munky Report
« on: May 07, 2008, 05:39:29 PM »
Tough day to be a Munky.

Got a late start and left dock at 8:30am.

Headed over to GK to get some bunker.

Water was like a lake so decided to open her up.

As soon as I was over 4200 rpm, check engine light came on (which means fuel restriction o Johnson engines).

Backed off and it went away. Played with that for 30mn or so.
Otherwise, engine started, idled and ran fine (but was a problem through out the day when over 4200 rpm).
Made it over to GK and bunker were there, but small schols sprad out.

Threw the net a few times before I realised I wasn't very good at it, especially solo. Small, lighter nets for peanuts SO much easier :)

Snagged a half dozen before my shoulder felt like it was going to fall off.

Bought a bucket ful (2 dozen or so) livies off a couple guys netting for $20 andf was on my way to where MIkey Gilligan was caching a few keepers.
Got out just as tide was slack. Few bluefish runoffs, but not solid hookups (just half bunker).

Talked to some people, made a BUNCH of moves, didn't read too many bass anywhere.
Bay turned REAL nasty as wind kicked up. Got beat up on way back to Keyport, wound up @ Keansburg to catch and release some 6lb cookie cutter bluefish.

Got back to dock, spent 1.5 hours troubleshooting DSC on my VHF.

Turns out the guy @ marin who wired it up last year used the wrong cable (from the FF black box module, not the GPS cable he was supposed to).

Straightened that out and came home.

Glad I didn't go to work today.

Fishinfool just told me 287N was closed for a big spill and wouldn't reopen until 8pm, so I would have been HURTIN' in traffic ;)

Now to figure out my fuel restriction issue.

Nice Report Mike..

Last time that happened to me was because I left untreated gas in the Carbs over the winter and it did a number on the seals and such..

You don't know it until you put some strain on the motor.

Needed a rebuild on the Carbs.

Hmm. Gas was def treated for sure.

I am thinking it has something to do with some fuel hose we added or the shutoff valve with 90 degree elbow. Some type of air or vacuum leak or anti syphon valve or something.

Runs pretty darn god (even at the higer RPM, just warning comes on :(

Sounds like you were having a lousy day. :-\

But at least you're discovering all the things you need to get fixed early in the season. t^

If she is running fine at WOT  I would say your not getting fuel restriction..

I'd go to www.iboats.com and search your phrase.. I rebuilt my engine with those guys help.  They rock!!

Already posted over there :)

Thanks.

As a side note, in my 31 years of fishing Raritan bay aea I have NEVER seen so much crap floating in the water.

2x4's, tree stumps, tree branches with an atached branch sticking up 4' out of the water, muck and just a LOT of wood in general. For a time, I had to slow down to avoid a lot of the crap (and some still bumped off the hull).

It runs ok and was doing over 30mph today in the mid 4000's, but redline is 5600 and at 4500 or so, damn light came on, didn't run any different other then not getting full rpm I guess.

1st I will make the do tuneup and change filters.

Then will check and swap out anti-siphon valve @ gas tank, check fuel fill vent and if that doesn't work, remove the new shutoff valve I installed.

I am really hoping it is just a clogged racor or anti siphon valve (which seems to be the most common cause of this from what I have been reading).

Mike, just got home and looked to see how you did, not exactly what was expected. Are you still going Saturday or will you be working on the boat?

Depends on the weather. If it is iffy or somewhat slopy, I will be tending to the boat as of now 9that could change). If weather looks solid, we are fishing. Just have to keep it under 30mph :)

Make sure you don't have a fuel line pinched somewhere going thru a bulkhead or deck.

Also, is there any way to eliminate the 90 degree fitting?

Mboy, I had a similar situation in the fall of last year. All fuel lines, fuel filler hoses, and primer bulp were checked. It turned out to be what looked like strans of cloth towel, or small rubber pieces of dirt just before the prime bulp. That caused just enough fuel restriction at 3300-3600 RPM.to cause problem.
Good luck in fixing yours.

Hi Mike,    I think all the crap in the water is from the high new moon tide. I hit a big piece of submerged wood on sunday and chipped my new bottom barrier coat and paint job right down to the Glass fibers. :P :P   I fixed it today on the trailer.   nosmly     , Eddie

I am thinking that could be the prime suspect right now. I am going to get rid of the 90 elbow this weekend.
