6/2 The Hook Bassing Blues

Set out at 0700 with Joe Stalling his Friends Jane and Lenny for a shot at bass.......

Soon as we got to the tip of the NAvy bird birds were working on the Belford side from the Reach going inshore for about 1/4 mile.....thought this was it, lots of action and we were the only boat. WOW was I wrong.

Fish were feeding on Rain Fish, threw everything we had, hooked one on a Deadly Dick and one one a Popper......other than that, Nodda, box should have been filled with so much action.

Ran to the back of the bay and set up, had a live line out and some lolly pops. Soon as I set out the third line Bam........Jane landed a nice 10 lb BLue......though again this was it.....nodda. Saw a couple more BLues landed and no Line siders.

Put one more 10 lb Blue in the box then switched locations Nodda. Gave a try at pulling wire, had great reads with tons of bait and fish markings....nothing.

The last hour or so we switched over to Fluke, landed some nice healthy Fat 17" Fluke that had to be thrown back............

Bob, one thing I've found that tends to work (sometimes) when rainfish are the main forage and the fish are so keyed up on them that they are eating nothing but the rainfish:  small, white bucktails with twisters just twitched mid-way through the water column in or near the birdplay.

I'm not saying its a day saver by any means, but it has worked a couple of times on my boat in the past.

A good second choice:  small, low profile tins or metals, like kastmasters or kroc spoons. 

Not for nothing, but today (from what I heard) was another shyte day so you did pretty darn good for your efforts

Thanks will give that a shot, they didn't touch Crocs, AVA 27 plain or w/white tail, Kasmaster, tried setting down bunker chunks, storm shad, various plugs, only got the one on a deadly dick and one on a popper   Not the first time for and i am sure it won't be the last

Another thing you might consider when the fish are on rainfish is to use a a clouser minnow fly as a teaser ahead of your metal. Or remove the hooks from a topwater plug and to the rear eye of the plug tie on a 24" piece of #20 leader--to the end of the leader tie on your clouser.

I found a clouser in a olive/white or a light pink/white pattern works when they're on rainfish.

Gotta love those teasers especially the Clouser patterns.  I use them a lot with good success.

They're a favorite of mine to from fluke to weakfish.

They also prove to be deadly on false albacore.
