if its a yellow ocean yak it probably belongs to the second house in from the end. I've seen it sitting right on the edge of their back lawn and thought it wasn't a smart idea on their part. 5hrug

Oct 2nd

Tog being caught on incoming.  Had a short window and caught three nice ones on greenies, fat 12 to 13.5 inches, no keepers then it looked like smaller ones caught on slack tides.
What a blast.

Might hit the canal tomorrow and see if I can get any stripers or blues that may be lingering. We'll see. Or maybe head to the beach, haven't made up my mind yet.

Thanks.  This was my first time fishing the canal for tog.  How long is it good to fish for them.  Do they move out or theoretically can they be caught all winter?

Tried my luck for some stripers last night...started out around 8:30 at pinebluff and headed out around 11 or so. Nada, but I tell ya it was better than sitting home. Peace and quite. Could even hear a few small fish breaking water. Try that on a weekend afternoon. Than the River Belle made its way out. Looked like a light parade coming through.
Next adventure will be my first try at surf fishing, probably Belmar area. Now back to more reading at the Surf.

Well, the canal tog had a case of lockjaw today.

Fished the end of slack and the start of the incomming this morning for a couple of hours with my brother in law, nephew and his friend.

Managed a few hits and one tiny tog.  Ran out of hooks and sinkers before the bait was gone...

New to Fishing The Canal

New to fishing in the canal. When is it generally better to fish in it, incoming, outgoing or slack tide? BTW, saw someone fishing this afternoon who was picking away at some blackfish. 1 was about 13 1/2 inches.

welcome  grtn

The canal has been a big hot spot for tog. The tog prefer moving water. Bass, blues and weakies can be found around slack water. Winkman has posted some valuable info in some of the previous threads about different methods  for targeting these species in the canal. Good luck and enjoy the forum.  chrz

Can anyone tell me how long can we expect the blackfish bite to be good at the canal. This is my first year fishing for them.

I was able to get out and fish the south end of the canal.... I worked the entire area and found some nice fish on the Bay Head side....

The bait fish in the back area is just nuts...

The entire south end of the canal... with a good in-comming tide works for me... even with the kayak it was easy fishing,
The areas I fish are the ones you said where a wast of time
